1. How to change network mode? What do I need to be aware of when switching modes?
A: You can switch between Router mode, Hotspot mode, and AP/RE mode by toggling the mode switch on the device. The device will take a few minutes to reboot to switch modes, and then you will need to log into tplinkwifi.net to configure the device to the new operating mode.
2. What advanced functionality is possible with each mode?
A: Router Mode: USB sharing / Parental Control / QoS / VPN Client / VPN Server / Security
Hotspot Mode: USB sharing / Parental Control / QoS / VPN Client / VPN Server / Security
AP/RE Mode: USB sharing / Security
Note: USB sharing function cannot be used in USB Modem Mode/USB Tethering Mode.
3. Can I use my cell phone as an Internet provider?
A: Yes, with the USB tethering mode.
4. Can I connect to portal Wi-Fi in Range Extender Mode/Client Mode?

just bought this router and I have 2 questions regarding VPN Client feauture
- Is VPN available only in router mode? not possible to have it in access point mode?
if not possible how can I setup the router as bridge of my existing router to have all devices on the same list of IPs?
- when VPN client is on, can I have all traffic going under VPN instead of selecting a single device?

As far as I know, The answer to both questions is no. Currently, the working modes of TL-WR1502X include Access point mode, Hotspot mode, etc., and it cannot be set to bridge.
Regarding the second requirement, it may be possible in the future, but we'll need to keep an eye out for future firmware updates.

@Sunshine I want to use tl-wr-1520x as a medium to access 2tb storage by plugging an usb harddisk and share it on my main network so that from my pc or tablet I can store my documents not grater than 5 to 10 mb within my network as I am a novice when it comes to this currently using netgear orbi rbk 12 which has 1 lan and 1 wan port in back. Please assist with your valuable inputs on how can I complete this task. Revert asap as I need to buy this router soon. I need the travel router visible on my main network of netgear orbi. You can also email me the resolution on chetansaxenanb@gmail.com. will await your revert. Need this to be wireless as this will be displayed on ac 1200 netgear orbi rbk 12 network. Will buy the device on 13/12/2025 Saturday. I am from India
