 @David-TP,

I finally tried to make the wiring as discussed - both Deco units connected directly to the router via Ethernet cable. You don't have an official guide for this, so I reset the secondary Deco unit and placed it into House 2 as a router's replacement. Powered on and connected to the Ethernet cable. I cannot add it through the app. Image attached. I need exact steps to pull this off.

Hi,

Almost 6 months passed. It would be better to check whether your Deco M4 is up to date.

For Deco M4_v2, the latest firmware is 1.7.0 here: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/793908

As for the configuration,

After connecting the first main Deco M4 to Archer AX20(AX1800) and adding it to the Deco APP, please change the operation mode from "wireless router mode" to "Access Point mode".

Then, put the secondary M4 next to the main Deco M4 and add it to the Deco APP as an extra Mesh node first.

After that, please unplug it and take it to house 2 and connect it via the Ethernet cable this time.

Best regards.

  @David-TP,

Access point setting has always been set.
You mean that I should reconnect the secondary Deco as a Wi-Fi node while being physically close to the main Deco (i.e. House 1)?
Then move the secondary Deco to House 2 and plug the router Ethernet cable and AC power into it?
Correct?

Yes, that's what I meant.

@David-TP,

I asked for strict instructions so I can follow very strictly. Apparently this is not the way to do this.
As I mentioned my secondary Deco had been reset. So, the first step was adding it again. Placed the secondary Deco near my main Deco and paired:

So far so good. I even connected clients and it works fine.

So, it was time to move it to House 2. Removed the old router. Plugged the Ethernet cable from the main router and the AC cable to the secondary Deco. Well, I never got this to work properly. It never showed proper connection on the map.

Actually the app become pretty much useless. I was not able to manipulate any of the Decos in any way. No reboot, no refresh:

The LED on the secondary Deco was flashing red for huge amount of time. Even when at some point turned white, it was still not working properly. WI-FI was disconnecting clients. Even when tried manual restarts of both Decos (again, the app become useless) it was still not working properly. Even the main Deco started misbehaving. It feels like they were fighting for the same place and cannot coexist. Yes, mode has always been set to access point. Yes, everything is up-to-date.

Would it make any difference if we plug the Ethernet cable that run from house 1 to house 2 directly from the first main Deco M4, instead of connecting to the Archer AX20(AX1800)?

By the way, if the current Deco M4 is V2_1.6.5, it is also suggested to install the latest 1.7.0 version here:

Deco M4_V1/V2_1.7.0 Official Ready for Test!

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

@David-TP,

As I mentioned, I'm not able to introduce this new cable. However, I did try the exact same thing with a tiny Ethernet cable connecting Main Deco to the secondary. Yes, everything seem to work fine. The app remains responsive and shows the cable connection properly.

As I said, the Deco does not have any updates through the app.

Hi, Thanks for the update.

The 1.7.0 hasn't been officially released yet and can't be detected via the Deco APP for now.

If the network finally stabilizes, we can also wait for the official release.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

@David-TP,

I clearly do not understand your answer.

You ask me to update my Deco with a version that does not exist (yet)? The first time you mentioned that this type of connection is possible was in 2024. How come I should be waiting for an update in Apr 2025? On top of all this, I don't see anything in the changelog regarding my problem.

You also ask me to wait for the network to stabilize? What does this even mean? If you suggest that I should keep the two Decos connected in that dysfunctional way, that's not an option. I actually need my network to work properly, and you can see from the screenshots that this is everything but properly.

Hi, I do hope you keep connecting the satellite Deco M4 in house 2 to the main Deco M4 in house 1, instead of the Archer AX20.

(If both Ethernet connections that run to hous1+2  are from Archer AX20, as the main Deco M4 is already connected to Archer AX20 via an Ethernet cable, I think there could be a way to unplug the 2nd Ethernet connection from AX20 and put it into the 2nd port of the main Deco M4. If it is possible, please forgive my ignorance.)

There could be various potential reasons for the Ethernet Backhaul connection instability when house 2 M4 is directly connected to AX20,  including factors related to the actual Ethernet deployment structures between the two houses. The root cause has not been identified yet. If you're keen to find out why, I would need your further time and patience with our senior engineers for specific debug analysis. It might take some time. So I know that the current workaround might not be ideal, but it is a quick solution for the time being.

As for the firmware, each new firmware is intended to fix some previously reported bugs, which is the initial proposal to test the 1.7.0 firmware. Deco firmware release is gradually phased in based on the MAC addresses. Usually, a group of users will detect the new version via the Deco APP first, while others might wait for a bit longer. The 1.7.0 version does exist and has been released, but it just hasn't been pushed to your hardware yet.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.
