Model: Deco XE75 Pro
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.11

Has anyone have an issue on the XE75 with the VPN client connection speeds?

I've setup a client connection using Surfshark and the performance is really poor. Setup with Paris as a destination on UDP (TCP was understandably slightly slower) and getting repeated speed tests around 15 - 20 Mbps. If I disconnect and use the Surfshark client on my phone (in exactly the same location and connected to the same server) I get repeated speed test results in excess of 200 Mbps.
Just wondering if I've missed something.
TIA

Hi, welcome to our community.

About the VPN client's slow speed, the speed performance of the Deco router acting as a VPN client is normal because TP-Link router's CPU cannot handle VPN encryption as quickly as a computer/phone acting as a VPN client. When an encrypted tunnel is established between the router and the VPN provider, it adds overhead to the router's processor/resources, resulting in a drop in performance, which also means a drop in WAN to Internet throughput. If you want to get a higher speed performance, you can try the below methods:

1. Use a better VPN protocol, such as WireGuard >> OpenVPN >> PPTP/L2TP

2. Adapt UDP protocol in Open vpn

At the same time, the related R&D has been working on improving the speed performance.

Thanks for your understanding and best regards.
