poor 2.4ghz antenna response low range and random stoppages TD-W8970B ADSL router

wireless line of sight range about 20 metres - is this normal ?
frequent log errors : PPP Error ppp0 LCP down and PPP Error ppp0 Failed to authenticate ourselves to peer . Is this just my rubbish lan ?
