Model: Deco BE65
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

I don't have a fixed internet line at home and I want to use my phone hotspot to connect to my Deco BE65, so the Deco creates a wifi network connecting to my phone hotspot so that I can use connect other devices to the Deco wifi network.

The phone generating the hotspot is an iphone 14 Pro Max. The network provider is Three in the UK.

I have gone through the online instructions to set up my Deco on Ap mode and reset it. Unfortunately after the Deco restarting, I don't get the 'More' menu on my app because the restart of the Deco deletes the network and ask me to configure my Deco network again.

The Deco stays with a red light from that point. The only way out it to reset it physically with a pin. That eventually gets the Deco discoverable by the app but it doesn't connect to my hotspot to create the wifi network from it.

Can someone help, please. Thanks!

Hi, Thank you very much for the feedback.

Deco BE65 can't wirelessly connect to the mobile hotspot. For a few Deco models, like Deco X50_V1, it supports "Internet backup>hotspot" but the mobile hotspot still works as a temporary backup solution. The current firmware of Deco BE65 doesn't support this feature yet.

Deco Internet Backup Feature Guide

I think other than Deco BE65, a Deco 5G gateway, like Deco BE65-5G is more suitable for your case. So you can insert a Three SIM directly into Deco BE65-5G.

Best regards.

  @Italens  I would really like to see them fix this so you could use your cellphones strive as a backup link.  This doesn't seem like it would be that hard to put into there system.

  @David-TP

After a lengthy chat with support, the xxx-5G models (with internet back up) aren't available in the US.

  @Italens

I have the perfect solution for you! I’m actually using this exact setup while waiting for my new house to be connected to fiber.

You’ll need a Travel Router (like the TL-WR902AC or the TL-WR802N, which is what I use) configured in 'Client Mode'. This allows the device to pick up your phone's hotspot and pass the internet connection through its Ethernet port. Simply connect an Ethernet cable from the Travel Router to your Deco, and you’re all set!

Once your permanent internet line is installed, just swap the Travel Router for your ONT or modem.

Key Tips:

  • Use 'Client Mode': This prevents the device from creating an unnecessary second Wi-Fi network.

  • Set Deco to 'Router Mode': Ensure your Deco is set as a Router, not an Access Point.

  • Bypass Hotspot Limits: This setup allows the Deco to handle all your devices. Since your phone only 'sees' the one connection from the Travel Router, you can bypass the typical device limits found on mobile hotspots.

I can guarantee this works from personal experience, though there is a trade-off in speed. Currently, I’m getting about 70 Mbps through the Travel Router, compared to the 600 Mbps I get when connected directly to my phone’s hotspot. I guess it depends on the 10/100 Mbps LAN port of the TL-WR802N. However, for a temporary setup, it is incredibly stable and handles all my smart home devices perfectly.

Hope this helps!
