Hi there

I am new to the forum, many thanks in advance for any help!

After my old Nedgear wireless modem router packed up I've got myself the separate modem router (TD-8840T, newest firmware) and the wireless router (TL-WDR4300, newest firmware), in case either internet performance or wireless performance would be an issue. Everything is connected and setup as per defaults (TD8840T LAN1 to TLWDR4300 WAN), and in principle works well. However, I cound't resolve the following as yet:

1. I loose out on available LAN ports on the TD8840T as it is on a different subnet (192.168.1.x). I can connect a device and it would have access to the internet, but I can't see it from within the wireless network (192.168.0.x).

2. I have a security system (Paradox), which can be managed remotely via apps. It requires port forwarding, which I set up accordingly (ports 80 and 10000).
2a. If I connect the paradox CAT5 to the modem router it can call out and reaches the app via the paradox server; however, I can't see it locally as it is on a diferrent subnet.
2b. If I connect the paradox CAT5 to the wireless router I can see it locally, but it doesn't manage to call out despite port forwarding. I haven't figured out why.

I tried to get all equipment onto one subnet by disabling DHCP on one side with only the other being the router, connected LAN to LAN instead of LAN to WAN, but it doesn't work well. Either internet connecting wouldn't work any more, or the paradox could still not get out etc.

What's the best config for the above situation, is it possible to have all in one subnet?

Again, many thanks for any assistance!

Heiko

Please provide a diagram or more detail about all network devices and connections to their respective ports on each of router and adsl modem.

Another question, when you wrote "I can connect a device and it would have access to the internet, but I can't see it from within the wireless network (192.168.0.x)."
What did you mean you can't see it from the wireless network. Are you simply referring to Windows File Sharing and Network Printing?

A device attached via CAT5 to the TD8840t would be able to perform normal network tasks with 192.168.1.x subnet, e.g. if connect a PC or laptop to it wired, this machine could go into internet and if there were more than one device connected this could also do file sharing etc.

However, these devices are not visible from the TD WDR4300 WLAN / LAN as the correct subnet is 192.168.0.x, and the connection between the two routers is via the WAN port, which doesn't allow cross subnet views. E.g. the wireless speaker system Sonos comes with a device called bridge that enables its wireless function and to link the data within the network (Synology NAS) with the speakers. However, the bridge must be wired to a router to receive DHCP addresses for the speakers. I don't need to have access to the bridge in every day work. However, I can't connect it to the TD8840t in order to save a LAN port on the WDR4300 as the subnet of the bridge would then be different from the speakers.

Another example is the paradox security system as explained. Connected to the TD8840t it can connect to the external server and can hence be accssed via the internet, while at the same time I can't see it from within the local network. Vice versa when connected to the WDR4300.

Hi there

I will try tonight to setup the WDR4300 as an access point only ( http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=417). Thought I tried it before but might have missed a point.

The FAQ doesn't talk about NAT, do I need to disable NAT on the WDR4300?

Or is it possible / advisable to set the WDR4300 as the router (DHCP on) and TD8840t as a modem only (DHCP off)?

The easiest and correct thing to do is to buy a 8-port or 16-port switch but it seems you are determined to use your WDR4300.

Here is how you make it work.
Go to WDR4300 --> Unplug WAN port
Go to WDR4300 --> WAN --> Change WAN Connection to Dynamic IP --> Leave unplugged
Go to WDR4300 --> LAN --> Use 192.168.0.2/24 according to your subnet
Go to WDR4300 --> DHCP --> Default Gateway --> 192.168.0.1 (This is your TD8840T)
Save Settings & Reboot

Go to TD8840T --> LAN --> Use 192.168.0.1/24 (Same subnet as WDR4300)
Go to TD8840T --> LAN --> DHCP --> Disable
Save Settings and Reboot

Plug TD8840T (LAN port 1) --> TL-WDR4300 (LAN port 1)
The 2 devices are now bridged and all ports can see one another.

Ping TD8840T from device plugged into WDR4300, Ping 192.168.0.1 !!!! Success
Ping WDR4300 from device plugged into TD8840T, Ping 192.168.0.2 !!!! Success

Note: Port Forwarding will have to be reconfigured for 192.168.0.0/24 subnet as per your diagram.
The TD8840T should now forward 80/10000 directly to the Paradox at 192.168.0.200 instead of 192.168.1.100

Thanks vpnrouter!

Did exactly that and it (almost) worked! Only, that I would loose internet connection on PCs attached to either device. I've figured the problem out after some forth and back:

1) One has to disable NAT and SPI on the WDR4300 .

2) The one thing that's nowhere mentioned is the "Bridge" setting that TD8840t has automatically when one sets up the ADSL connection. It bridges between the different subnets on the default setting of 192.168.1.x on TD8840t and 192.168.0.x on a subsequent device connected via WAN port. However, when the devices are on the same subnet that "bridge" setting causes confusion. I had to delete it manually in the WAN settings of TD8840t (sorry, don't have a screen print).

I therefore recommend that in your response you rather not use the word "bridging" in the context of connecting the two devices within one subnet, as bridging is exactly when it is about two :)

Regardless, mainy thanks; this post can now be closed. Have a great and save day and festive season!
So, my LAN is set up, and the port forwarding works!
