Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I have three Deco M5 units, the main unit is set as router connected to the internet. The other two units are connected to the main unit via switch (I also tried without switch).

My issue is that the secondary units are not connecting it via ethernet, see this screenshot:

– which is surprising as the third unit connects to the second via ethernet correctly. I also took the photo of the setup (please don't judge me for the messy cables), by the LED lights you can see the switch has connected to all three Decos correctly.

Setup

Can you tell what I may have setup wrong?

There are two possibilities:

1. From the photo, I can tell that switch you are using is from D-Link. This brand of switch is known to have issues with Deco Ethernet backhaul. If you have different switch you could try, use it instead. If not, get 5-port TP-Link unmanaged gigabit Ethernet switch, such as TL-SG105, and try with it.

2. It is possible there is an issue with Ethernet cable between Main Deco and D-Link switch. Replace that Ethernet cable with different cable. To reiterate: Ethernet cable that connects Main Deco to D-Link switch.

  @Alexandre.

1. I tried even without the switch, connecting the two units directly together.

2. I tried even different cables. No luck

Is it possible that there is some bad settings?

There are no settings to stop two units (Main and Satellite) connected to each other with Ethernet cable from using that Ethernet cable.

Satellite Deco will immediately start using Ethernet backhaul if it can.

I had Deco M5s until recently, when I upgraded my Deco mesh to WiFi6 model. Deco M5 is one of best WiFi5 Deco units, maybe not the fastest but with very few issues when it comes to hardware and firmware.

Hi, thanks for posting question here.

Did you connect two satellite Decos to the switch at the same time?

Did you try different ports on the switch and the second Deco for a try?

You may also swap the second and third Deco to confirm whether the problem remains.

This guide is for your reference:

General questions about Ethernet Backhaul feature on your Deco

Best regards.

I really tried everything, see below - units are connected with a single cable (I tried several ones) and yet they still connect via WIFI instead of wiring. (the third unit is completely turned off)

Hi, can I have the current firmware version of your Deco M5?

Have you tried replacing a new short Ethernet cable to connect the satellite M5 to the main M5? (Please also test switching different Ethernet ports.)

By the way, may I know how long you've had the Deco?

Best regards.
