Hi all,

I am planning to purchase BE85 (3 pcs pack) when I upgrade my fibre plan to 5Gbps.

I am reading and watching some videos on BE85 and I am a bit confused.

I am planning to use wired backhual and I have the following questions:

  1) Can I use 1 of the unit to be a router?  I hope to connect it directly to the ONT and use it as a router.  Some articles and videos said it can and some said it cannot.  With this, 1 unit will become a router and the 2 satellites as AP?

  2) For the other 2 satellite units, do I need to use a switch to connect the ethernet cables or can I plug 2 cables directly in main unit (which act as router) and link them together?  I am confused on this part as I am not sure which 2 ports (2.5Gbps or 10Gbps) should I plug the 2 ethernet cables into the main unit (to maximise the internet speed) if no switch is needed.

If 1 port of 10Gbps is needed for the connection to ONT, does it mean that I can only use the remaining 2 ports of 2.5Gbps as my wired backhual?  Is it better to use a switch for the wired backhual of the 2 satellite units?

I hope that my questions are not confusing.  Please help to advise on the above.

  Thank you.

Hi, welcome to the community.

It is suggested to refer to the FAQ: General questions about Ethernet Backhaul feature on your Deco

It is ok to connect the main Deco BE85 directly to the ONT and use it as a router.

The satellite unit syncs all network settings from the main Deco. In other words, if the main Deco is in wireless router mode, so does the satellite unit.

"Some articles and videos said it can and some said it cannot."

If possible, you can share the link with me so that I can check if the article needs to be updated

If there are enough Ethernet ports from the main Deco, you can connect the other 2*BE85 directly to the first main Deco BE85. An extra switch is not needed in this case.

For the ports selection, there is no specific requirement, but a matched speed is more recommended, such as 2.5G <>2.5G, 10G<> 10G.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.
