Model: Deco BE95
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.0 Build 20241217 Rel. 38308

Hi, the problem is this: I have a DECO BE95, which works correctly with DHCP and its assignment; everything is fine.

Now, when I tried to reserve IP addresses on my wired and Wi-Fi networks, the problem started.

I loaded all the Macs on my devices, laptop, phone, etc., and assigned them IP addresses within the DHCP range I have: 192.168.xx.100 to 192.168.xx.200.

Obviously, I restarted the router and all the machines.

But when I start turning them on and adding them using the router's DHCP server, it often gives me a different IP address for the machines for which I have reserved IP addresses.

It gives me another address from the DHCP spectrum and also usually gives those reserved IP addresses to other devices, not just mobile phones and tablets, but also the wired machines themselves, which have other Macs for which I also reserve addresses.

 It's as if instead of first asking what list of reserved IPs they're on and checking the MAC address of the device requesting an IP via DHCP, it grants it directly without checking the reservation list.

This happens even when I disconnect everything from the router and only connect one wired machine from the ones that request a fixed IP, and it still gives it a different IP address.

NOTE: I clarify that on devices like tablets and phones, disable MAC randomization and let it use the device's physical MAC address.

NOTE 2: This happens for Windows, Linux, Raspberry Pi OS, and Mac.

I think it's due to a bug in the device's software. I tested the same thing with an old TP-LINK TL-WR841HP router, and the reservation works correctly.

Good afternoon, @David-TP . Install the new firmware and run the tests as you instructed.

First, I connected them, added them to the reserved list, and disconnected from both the tablet and phone. I reconnected, and they kept the IP address I had assigned to them by DHCP.

Then, I changed both IP addresses to a different one within the DHCP range and disconnected again and closed the app.
When I reconnected both devices and opened the app, I had correctly assigned them the IP address I had reserved.

Could it be that the latest firmware for my device, version Deco BE95_V1_1.1.0_241217 that I downloaded from the website, has a problem, and yours is the correct one?

How do I continue now? Should I leave this firmware?

Thanks

  @wolf73

This is how IP address reservation works on Deco: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/1795/

If you are trying to configure static IP addresses on devices itself, that will not work with Deco mesh.

  @Alexandre.  I just used that tutorial to configure it, and it still doesn't work.

Are you telling me that if I set static IP addresses on my computers, they won't work on the DECO router's network?

This is correct. It will be unsupported configuration.

Supported process:

1. Disable MAC randomization on device;

2. Configure device to request IP address dynamically;

3. Reserve IP address for that MAC in Deco app following the link I provided.

If that does not work, the process failed.

But, as a proof of process failure, you'll need to provide screenshots from your Deco app: device info page with its MAC and actual IP address Deco sees, IP reservation page in Deco app with that same MAC and IP address you configured there.

  @Alexandre.

Okay, I'll send this information.

But that's not the only problem. It assigns those IP addresses to other devices that connect first, giving reserved IP addresses to devices that connect with MAC addresses other than the reserved ones.

I had already loaded all the MAC addresses on my machines, removing the random MAC addresses, as well as my phones and tablets. And yet, DHCP continues to malfunction; it doesn't respect the requirement to assign reserved IP addresses to other devices.

Something I don't understand: Are you telling me that if I set a fixed IP address on machines wired to a switch and the switch directly to the router, which means I don't need the decoder's mesh functionality, I still can't set fixed IP addresses so I can access them from outside through the router?

That is, no type of fixed IP address is allowed within a network managed by a DECO router, even if they're connected wired?

  @wolf73

Configuring static IP address on device is unsuported in Deco mesh. If you configure static IP address on device, this is how it'll work:

1. Device will have its static IP address which will be ignored by Deco mesh;

2. You will not see device with static IP address in Deco app in the list of online devices: it'll be either shown offline or not present at all;

3. Because Deco will not respect static IP address configuration on device, it may allocate that same IP to a different device (or even to Satellite Deco), thus causing IP address conflict;

4. IP traffic routing to/from that device with static IP address will most likely still work, as long as there is no IP conflict.

DHCP address reservation is very basic functionality which leaves little for software developer error, if user follows the process.

One more thing. By default, Deco mesh allocates IP addresses in 192.168.68.* IP range. If you haven't changed that and you see dynamic IPs on devices from different range or subnet, you may be having another DHCP server active on your network.

Ok, How do i reserve ip addresses if the router not respect the MAC address reservation?

So far there is no proof it does not.

Supported process for IP address reservation in Deco mesh:

1. Disable MAC randomization on device;

2. Configure device to request IP address dynamically;

3. Reserve IP address for that MAC in Deco app following the link I provided.

  @wolf73 Hi, thank you very much for the email.

Can you also help me run the following test, then save the web UI system log and send it to me again:

  • Install the debug firmware I've sent via private message.
  • Remove all the "Address Reservation" profiles and restart Deco once.
  • Connect the mobile device to Deco first with DHCP.
  • Go to Deco APP> Add Address Reservation> "Select from Clients" and save the reversed profile. (It would be much better to add 2-3 profiles.)
  • Restart the mobile client(or disconnect and connect to Deco WiFi again) and check whether it has been assigned the same IP address.

How to save the web UI log: Deco web interface login

By the way, I'll also forward your case to the senior engineer for further confirmation.

Please refer to the email for more suggestions.

Best regards.

  @wolf73

Hi, thanks for the message.

The beta firmware is based on the official version and is mainly used for troubleshooting. It should be the same as the official one, so I can't figure out what might have changed in the beta version for now.

I think you can keep this version while waiting for the next official one.

Best regards.
