Hello from Greece
Recently i bought the V1 edition of this modem router.
It is amazing for the cost, nevertheless i have a problem with the wireless function of the unit.
I own a Dell N5110 wit the intel centrino 1030 wifi card.
My problems begin with the download speeds it is very unstable.
It is not an isp problem because my previous modem router(Airties 5440)and olso the one that my provider(forthnet)gives a technicolor TD 5130 have a very stable transfer speed over the wifi.
I start downloading something(i try nvidia drivers)and my speed starts from 1.6MB/s and drops to 900KB,500KB and up again at 1.1MB-900KB-1.3MB and so on.
i contacted the shop that i bought it and they gave me the V3 of the same model BUT i have almost the same issues.
i have updated my intel wifi drivers to the latest(as far the intel site gives for that card)but no luck.
I have tried changing channels, going from auto channel width to 20MHz only or 40 but nothing.
it doesn't matter if i am 50cm away from the modem or 3 rooms away, same drill everytime.
My laptop is out of warranty, and i have no other devices to check the speeds(no smartphones/tablets etc)The ethernet connection is flawless at any given monent.
My airties 5440 and TD5130 do not have these bumps at transfering speeds they are very stable.
Thanks in advance for everyone reading this,i have lost hope 3 days straight.

as it seems so far, there are problems with the 1030 wifi module after a small search i did,the modems are fine.
i've turned off the wireless-N function of the wifi card and manages to keep 1.6MB/s stable at downloading from the internet(as my previous modems did)
But i cannot understand why there are incompatibilies with wifi cards and wifi routers/cards etc.
Bad drivers maybe,defective products?

Try to change transmit power to 50% on wireless advanced page.
If it still doesn't help, you'd better test with a different wireless client.

still the same.
only when i disable the wireless-N function of the wifi card i get decent speeds.
i tested with my old airties and transferred a big file from my desktop(with lan connetion)to my laptop(with wifi connection). Even having the laptop sitting next to the modem, the problem still occurs.
Tested it with the airties and the 8970 V3,on the same file,i get the same "hiccups" on trasferring speeds when the -N is on.
While i'm on 802.11g mode connection is perfect and so are the transerring speeds-no hiccups.
But i'm get worried why all this time i hadn't been able to spot the problem with the airties 5440 i was using, even when 802.11n was on for 4 years straight. I was having dips those 4 years but i thought that it was normal because there are more than 10 wireless networks around
Maybe i was lucky and the wifi card of the 5440 was more compatible to the intel 1030?
i cannot get it.
Anyway,i think my problem is partially solved,i do not have VDSL connection here and my intenet speed is 15998Kbps so 802.11g mode is capable handling my donwloads.

Hi again.
Recently i bought the 722N usb adapter. The problems still occurs and is very annoying.
i open utorrent to download something eg ubuntu 15.04
I start with full speed 1.5MB/s
After 10-15 minutes my connection drops to 400-800KB/s and stays there. I cannot serf the internet normally, pages time out etc.
I restart the modem the problem dissapears for the next 10-15 minutes.
I disconnect the 722N adapter the problem disappears for the netx 10-15 minutes.
8 out of 10 times i try to download something, the annoying thing occurs. It's really frustrating.
May it has something to do to my surrounding networks?
Where i live there are 12 networks using 1,6,11 channel in the 20MHz band.
i use channel 8 to my home network.
If i use 6 or 11 the download speeds are horrible.

Go to Forwarding---UPnP and disable it. It may help.
If not, contact TP-LINK support team on this issue as it is a replacement already...

i'll try and see in the next days.
I ve already have a replacement unit from my local shop, i thought the first one was problematic, but i read about my laptop's wifi card problems and bought the 722N adapter.
This device does exactly the same thing over the wifi.
2 defective products at the same time?

i tried disabling upnp
NOTHING changed.
My laptop with utorrent on lags like hell, speeds are from 400KB to 600KB an cannot even surf properly
My desktop with wired connection works like a charm in surfing and doing anything else, even speedtesting.
What should i do now?
same thing happens with the 722N connected to my laptop.
I'll try to connect my 722N to my desktop and see what happens in utorrent.

Re:TP-Link W8970 WiFi issues

Hi again.
I checked my 722N with my desktop.
I try to download ubuntu 15.04 frome the official site with utorrent link.
The download started ok with 1.5 MB/s down speed.
After a while same thing, speed stucks at 500-800KB and my ping is above 900ms.Wired connection to my laptop this time works like a charm.
So i have a second defective unit in my hands now?
i cannot test it further, since my parents need internet connection.
I hooked up my isp's modem-router a technicolor 5136V2 and downloaded the ubuntu torrent iso with no sweat at 1.5MB/s all the time even with wireless connection to my 722N usb stick.

Re:TP-Link W8970 WiFi issues

Here i am again.
So,i tested with different torrent clients and every time i have the same issue.
What i found is that if i limit my total connections to 30 or less,My download speed is excellent and i can also surf the net with decent ping.
If i raise the connections above 35-37 i have the "bottleneck",download speeds are 400-900KB and ping over 900.
i connect my 8970 with a cat5e to my laptop.I can donwload and surf even with 100 connections on.
What should i do now?
Is this a normal behaviour?

Re:TP-Link W8970 WiFi issues

so here i am again, after so much time.
A friend of mine bought the same modem for his house to replace what his ISP gives.
I borrowed the modem and connected it to my line and performed the same tests.
So, the problem still occurs even with this device.
Are all W8970 faulty?
is it a hardware limitation?
i cannot reproduce the problem to my friend's line since he has a 6Μbit line and the download speed does not exceed 600KB/s.
