Hi

I have been experiencing WiFi and network drops recently. The x50 is my main deco with a number of satellites.

WiFi stays connected but with no signal and then the wires network drops.

CPU usage is pretty much constantly 100%, with memory usage being 79%.

I have disabled beam forming and any other optional features.

I have the feeling that the deco is overheating as the problem only started once we have had a very warm spell of weather.

@rmpt Hi, welcome to the community.

Can I have some screenshots of the current network map, such as:

Did the disconnection happen randomly to all the wireless devices? or just some of them?

How often would the mobile devices drop out?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Thanks for your reply.

Initially the wifi connection remains but network connectivity is lost. Then eventually the LAN connection will fail.

This happens randomly but started last week as the temperatures have risen.

The main deco is very hot and I have the impression that as it gets hotter it is throttling itself.

The deco that shows as disconnected in the screenshots was the main deco on the ground floor and has also been overheating.

@rmpt Hi, thank you very much for the update.

I noticed apart from the Deco X50, there are also 2 other Deco models(they look like Deco X50-outdoor). Can I have their model number and firmware version?

Deco X50 doesn't have a cooling fan. I wonder if you could add a fan next to the main Deco. Does it make any difference to the network stability?

Please also avoid placing Deco in a closed environment, such as a metal file cabinet or a bookshelf surrounded by books.

By the way, as there are 9 Deco units in total, how many online clients do you have? Would there be many smart home devices?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Thanks for your reply.

There are two deco X 50 outdoors, firmware 1.2.8

I placed a fan next to the main deco but it did not solve the problem.

The main deco is in an open environment.

The network has 28-30 online clients and 3 smart devices.

Yesterday the temperature dropped significantly but the problem remained so I started to experiment with various scenarios. The deco network is a mixture of deco´s connected by wifi and also some connected by ethernet via switches and existing cabling. I discovered that if I revert all the decos to wifi connections (between each other) the network becomes much more stable.

At the moment I have disconnected all ethernet connections and the network seems to be ok. I will monitor this over the weekend and then update you.

Is there any reason why a deco network that has worked perfectly for some time suddenly starts to have problems with ethernet connectivity?

An update.

Since disabling all ethernet connections the problem has been solved.

What I do not understand is why this has suddenly started to happen.

However I can confirm that the network instability was caused by the use of etherner connections over LAN

Hi @rmpt

I have the same problem. Did you find out if it was a particular LAN connection or just any device? Also, I'm thinking that since this just randomly happened (no FW upgrade, it just started one day for me) it could be due to bad connection in a connector or a damaged cable. What do you think, any new learnings?

  @LimpanBulle

Hi. My problem was caused by connecting satellite decos to my LAN. This had never been a problem before.

My network has a mixture of decos connected using the local LAN and wireless mesh connections.

I have now disconnected the LAN connections and all of the decos are using wireless mesh. Since I altered this my network is perfect again.

I have no idea why this suddenly started to be a problem, but it was definetely an issue with wired decos conflicting.

@rmpt Hi all:  I recently added 2 extra satellites which brings me to a total of 6) x50 routers (access points). 3 outdoor and 2 indoor plus main x50-5g (operation mode= access point).

Within a couple hours of getting everything setup i started having the same issue. Main deco "craps-out", the others lose connection and sometimes do not recover.  I need a stable and reliable network as i use this to monitor the location when i am away extended.  What I can add is my opinion is this is definately CPU overloading.   I personally have several contributing factors.

1. 6 Satellites (1 was too close to main Deco) I've for now eliminated that one (it was in test for me)

2. Setting up a hybrid topology, forcing units in closer proximity to connect in serial fashion ( i understand this can also contribute to CPU load.

3. Usa of VPN... The problem really got bad when i enabled vpn and began streaming video.. Video without VPN did not cause the network to drop.

At the end of the day... what TP-Link cannot really admit, is that the CPU is not really sufficient to support the stated satellites, with daisy-chain mapping, add data activity and vpn and it just cant do it. So the spec can be met if you have the perfect conditions and do not have exacerbating conditions. This is what we call "specmanship"  I've concluded that I could continue to play with this and analyze it until I die but the cpu just cant manage....

Just logging on to the web interface pegs the cpu to 100% and after a few moments it settles back down. A clear sign to me, it just does not have enough power for all the contributing factors. Simply activate a vpn from pc or phone and you can monitor the rise in cpu load and then try to stream :)

Part numbers, firmware updates, relocating, jumping up and down, will never fix the insufficient cpu for the particular configuration.

While the TP-Link devices do have their quirks, I personally have decided to stay with my infrastructure investment but swap out the x50 for the BE85... (available in europe)

This brings my main router up to Wifi7 and many benefits, MAINLY an upgrade from a 1ghz dual-core cpu (x50)  to a 2.5ghz quad-core BE85.

The x50, in my opinion, is great for a typical small to medium house with not too many devices... trying to stretch that too much, is a waste of time.

For the time being while waiting to order and arrive the BE85, I have eliminated one satellite, refrained from vpn.  I expect that if I am not at home and there is only occasional web cam or device monitoring that it should stay at a reasonable cpu load and be stable. I can't wait to try the BE85.  Updates the system to current. One positive think I can say to TP-Link is the backward compatibility, allowing the introduction of newer units with older and not having to throw everything out... but of course that would be extremely high risk for TP-Link, to have customers switch over to competitors at that point hahaha But i like it anyway.

ciao

@63Vino you have a very similar network set up to me, and your problems are almost identical, I also run a VPN.

Do you have any decos connected via LAN? If so try disconnecting the LAN cables. This solved my problem and my deco network has been solid since I removed the LAN cables

 Just a little additional data.

I have 35 devices typically connected and currently, (5) x50 devices.  I did a little test by stopping any traffic that i can personally manage and monitoring the cpu & data rates... you can see swings from 13% to 98% cpu load and it seems that even when we think nothing is happening... chatter on the network from devices, exists.

Who knows.... could the fw code be more efficient? Probably, Do some of my devices not behave well? Probably.

I have Shelly, TP-Link cameras and other devices, several chinese "things" like flow-meters, level sensors, ceiling fans, etc.  No way to know how they behave and how much chaos they produce for the DECO.. another reason, that given the size of network and number of devices,,,, an upgraded DECO (cpu) is the next step.. I don't want to spend my life troubleshooting and managing something that was supposed to make my life easier :)
