TP-W9980 extremely slow upload speed

I recently installed a TP-Link W9980 modem using TalkTalk's 'own modem' guide to ensure I had all the correct account settings, but within a short period I encountered the following issues -
- Dropbox and Google Drive cannot synch
- Webpages take an age to load, and will fail.
- email will fail to download - AVG anti-virus struggles to download updates
- www.speedtest.net can test download speeds but not upload speeds.
- Windows Update has been unable to check for a new update since 6th September
- skype connection drops, if it can connect at all.
These issues occurred on my desktop PC that was hard-wired to the modem.
Other devices uses wirelessly, such as laptops, tablets and phones didn't appear to be affected.
I have now reinstated the TalkTalk modem, and my Internet has returned to normal on the desktop, and all of the above issues are resolved.
Can you please advise what may be strangling the TP-Link modem's connection to the web ?
