AX20 drops internet connection but only for certain clients, Android phone

Hi, my AX20 has worked perfectly for a couple of years, now, when my Pixel 7a tries to connect, i get a message saying either limited or no internet connection, occaisonally it will connect and work fine for some time (hours or minutes) and then show intertnet connection error and not work. I have a load of other clients (sonos, smarthome etc) and these all work perfectly well. Its super frustating. Recently house guests also had the same proble with Iphones losing connection to the net as well.
Signal strenght is perfect, connection to wifi all good.
Nothing changed in the config to cause this problem, since then I have changed to Google DNS and this has not resolved the problem.
I only use 2,4 network as home automation devices requires this, so 5ghzt is off. Single SSID.

Hello@MallorcaRat,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Based on your description, it's likely a problem with network authentication on the Internet Service Provider's (ISP) end. In particular, you mentioned "my fiber provider changed the WAN connection to their own network, and the problem still exists."
If possible, reset the router and reconfigure it.
Alternatively, you can configure the AX20 to connect to a different ISP to verify whether the issue is with the ISP's network.

Hello@MallorcaRat ,
Thanks for contacting our community.
How many wireless clients do you have? Does the problem only occur on certain phones?
Please check whether you have set parental controls to limit internet time on phones.
Enable a guest network for phones to see if they can keep a connection.
Also, you can change to a different wireless name for comparison.
Have there been any recent updates to your phone? Or any changes to your settings? You can also compare the connection stability of your phone on different networks.
Best Regards.

@Joseph-TP thanks for you quick reply.
So, I have around 25 clients, the number varies but not more than that.
The problem occurs on various phones, mixture of iPhone and Android. My particular device is faultless on other WiFi networks, for instance my work network.
As per normal with pixels, I get updates pretty much every month, my current Android version is 16 with build BP2A.250705.008
I will try a guest network and see if that helps.

Similar dropouts happened to me, and oddly enough I noticed it while trying to play Age of War Game on my phone. Switching channels manually fixed it.

Hi @MallorcaRat ,
You can also refer to lucabranz71's experience to modify the router's wireless channel: Changing Channel and Channel Width on a TP-Link Router (new logo).
For 2.4GHz: channels 1, 6 and 11, channel width 20MHz;
For 5 GHz: channel 149-165, channel width to 80MHz or 40MHz, etc.

Thanks for your sharing.
Changing the channel often resolves channel congestion, which is why changing the channel improves your Age of War game experience.

Hi thanks for all the replies, nothing really changed, I tried different channels, switching off qos, switching on QoS but only for my phone, powered off modern multiple times, changed ethernet cable router to modem, deleted all non connected clients, switch off read6y connect and probably load more things I cannot really remember. It seemed to work for about 24 hours after rebooting the modern, but then, off internet again, back ti square one. Aaaarrrgfhhhhhh

Hello @MallorcaRat ,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Have you tested the 5Ghz? You can enable it, and do not enable Smart Connect. That is, setting the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately.
Or, please test the guest network for comparison.
Please also contact your phone's support to confirm if there are any specific settings for the phone's connection.
Best Regards.

Hi, I already tested the guest network, same problem, also this phone operates faultlessly on other wireless networks, however, the problem affect various phones, not just one.
So yesterday, by coincidence, my fiber provider changed over the wan connection to their own network and the problem still exists.
When I am either blocked with "no internet connection" or "cannot establish an internet connection" if I access the router control panel, I can ping 8.8.8.8 without problems, so the router is physically connected to the outside world, simply refusing to make a valid connection to my WiFi device.
I am lost, seriously I cannot understand, so just for clarity.
Has worked perfectly for approx 2 years.
Now will allow connection for some time (between minutes and 24 hours) until auto swithes to 5g on the basis that there is no internet connection.
so in summary (in no particular order)
- Changed Chanels
- Changed router to modem Ethernet cable
- Tried guest network
- Switched off smart connect
- Set router dns to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
- Other connected devices appear to work faultlessly (smart home and Sonos for example)
- My specific device (pixel 7a with android 16) that reproduces the error (among others) works perfectly on other WiFi networks
- Can successfully Ping outside world directly from router at the same time it tells me no connection to the internet.
- Rebooted all devices including router & modem numerous times
