Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.2.4 Build 20241227 Rel. 63367

I currently have Deco X20 setup in router mode in my home. There is a wireless Main Network and a Guest Network setup. I have 2 Apple Mac computers on WiFi trying to share and access folders/files from each other. When both computers are on the Main Network, the devices are not able to connect to each other and access the shared folders. When both computers connect to the Guest Network, inter computer connection and file sharing access has no issues.

Further details are as follows:

  • Deco X20 Ver 3 with firmware version is 1.2.4 Build 20241227 Rel. 63367
  • Main Network and Guest Network set in Router Mode
  • No VPN, No Firewall (Firewall settings on Apple Mac computers are disabled)
  • There are 2 units of X20 in the network set in mesh settings
  • Checked on X20 setting, Device Isolation is DISABLED for both computers
  • The Apple Mac computers are able to see each other on the Network but when it tries to connect to access/view the shared files/folders, connection fails. The Apple Mac computers are also unable to ping each other. It returns "Request timeout for icmp_seq")
  • Both Apple Mac computers are able to successfully ping the router
  • I have tried to set Private WiFi Address on both computers as "OFF", but no difference
  • I have checked that both computers are on the same WiFi frequency, same subnet
  • I have tried to use an iPhone to AirPlay YouTube video to the Apple Mac computers. The iPhone lists the computers but is unable to connect. However, the iPhone is able to cast YouTube video on a Smart TV that is connected via WiFi on the Main Network
  • The computers are able to access and print documents via printer connected wirelessly on the Main Network

With the same settings as above, I changed both Apple Mac computers and the iPhone to the Guest Network. All the devices were able to successfully ping each other, access shared folders/files and the iPhone is able to AirPlay YouTube videos to the Apple Mac computers.

I'm not sure where could the issue likely be seeing that everything is the same except one is the Main Network and one is the Guest Network.

Please help!

  @Usacpat

Hi, welcome to the community.

Can I take it that only Apple devices can't communicate with each other when they are on the main WiFi network?

Have you checked if the Apple devices are connected to the same Deco X20? Will it be different if they are connected to different Deco units?

Does it make any difference if we disable the 2.4GHz under the main WiFi network?

If you enable the hotspot on the iPhone and connect the two MacBooks to the hotspot, will they be able to access folders/files from each other?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

Hi David,

Thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, it seems like only Apple to Apple communication has issues on the Main Wifi network. It doesn't have issue communicating with the SmartTV and Printer that are also on the Main Wifi network.

I tried your suggestion to force one of the Apple Mac computer to be on a separate X20 from the second Apple Mac computer and iPhone, and it manage to connect successfully with the Apple Mac/iPhone on the Main WiFi network now! Shared files and folders can be accessed and AirPlay works.

Just to confirm, I forced it back to the same X20 as the other two devices and sharing and AirPlay failed again.

What does this mean? Is there some settings that I misconfigured?

Thanks again for your time!

  @Usacpat

Hi, thank you very much for your time and patience.

You didn't misconfigure anything. I just saw a similar description before.

Can you constantly reproduce this issue?

  •  force one of the Apple Mac computer to be on a separate X20 from the second Apple Mac computer and iPhone, and it manage to connect successfully with the Apple Mac/iPhone on the Main WiFi network now! Shared files and folders can be accessed and AirPlay works.
  • Just to confirm, I forced it back to the same X20 as the other two devices and sharing and AirPlay failed again.

If yes, I'd like to follow up on your case via email. Please check whether you can receive my email.

By the way, can you share some screenshots of the network map on the Deco APP, such as:

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

Hi David,

I have replied to your email with the screen shots. In short, yes the issue can be replicated every time I move the Apple device between the X20s.

Thanks again!
