Model: Deco M4   Deco X50
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hi,

I have 3 Cat 6 runs connecting Main Deco unit to 3 others. 1Gb fibre serves the network.

Connecting to the 3 'Satellite' Decos via Wifi often gives 'slow' speeds for a client, compared to the Main Deco on wifi.  e.g. 30Mbps v 350 Mbps download.

As 2 of them were M4R, I thought it could be with the performance of the older units.  However, I have replaced to test with X50s, but there is no tangible improvement.

I've tested all 3 Cat 6 runs (all less than 50m) with a cable connected PC, and am receiving a very stable 1Gbps, so the Cat 6 and connectors seem to be good.

The net result is that wifi speeds connecting to the Main Deco, even with reduced wifi strength due to distance, are usually better than full strength wifi connections to the 'satellite' decos.  All firmware is up to date.

Surely this is not how the system is intended to perform?

Is this others' experience? Is the mesh software not cable of preserving speed when going wifi - deco - backhaul - main deco?

Any help welcome

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback.

Have you confirmed on the Deco APP that all three satellite Deco units are using Ethernet Backhaul?

(Or can I have some pictures of your network map on the Deco App, such as)

How about the firmware version of the Deco X50 and Deco M4?

"I have 3 Cat 6 runs connecting Main Deco unit to 3 others."

-Would there be any network switches? Did the Ethernet cable run directly from the main Deco or from the Ethernet Wall jackets?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply,
Network map stopping me posting this, I'll try again, but Ethernet backbone is confirmed in the pic.

Bar, Gallery X50, Office X50 (both X50s previously M4R, trying these out to see if any improvement, so far not) - all running Ethernet off backbone.

Connecting wired PCs straight to them all get full speeds of ~1Gbps.  Wifi PC (or iOS clients etc) good speeds while connected to Hall (MAIN), much less when directly connected to Bar, Gallery, Office.

Fibre Optic Router has Hall (MAIN), Bar and Gallery X50 straight out of 1Gb ports on router.  Office X50 goes in to 1Gb network switch, then on to X50.

Firmware X50 1.6.7 Build 25031412 Re. 48241, M4R 1.8.0 Build 20250721 Rel. 49216.

App says fully up to date

Hi, thanks for the update.

Is the network topology like:

Did you set Deco into "Access Point" mode under Deco APP>More>Advanced>Operation Mode?

Have you tried to connect the laptop via an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet-Backhaul satellite Deco X50(for example, the Gallery Deco X50)? Is it also about 1Gbps?

Or if you check on Ethernet connection speed on the Fiber Optic router, will all the Ethernet ports negotiate to 1Gbps?

I think it is likely that, except for the main Hall Deco X50, the Ethernet connection speed is capped at 100mbps on the satellite Deco X50s.

Please also temporarily disable 2.4GHz under the Main WiFi network and leave 5GHz only.

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @David-TP Thanks again,

Yes, the network topology is exactly like that

Yes, Operation mode is 'Access Point'

I'll double check all satellites, but last check was that all were close to 1Gbps

Yes, all Ethernet ports are 1Gb

No, the satellites are not capped at 100Mb, I occasionally record speeds well over that even on wifi, just not as fast the main one.

I can't disable 2.4MHz, as some devices only work on that, but I have additional questions which may be also part of the problem.

Several clients are disconnecting and reconnecting to different units, leading to intermittent problems.  Often they are reconnecting with a Deco unit with a weaker wifi signal, which could account for slower speeds.

I have tried to combat this by changing Connection preferences, to stay with the closest unit for usually fixed devices.  Unfortunately, the software does not seem to retain these settings, and appears to reset to Automatic.  With my main laptop, which has a Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201 adapter, it also cannot connect to the 5MHz network, so I have had to return that to Auto connection, which always goes to 2.4Mhz.

To be honest, I am beginning to believe that there are major problems with the Deco Mesh connection and routing software. There appear to be many other users that are experiencing connectivity drops & system instability, as well as throughput limitations.

I hope that you can suggest where I go next to try and improve and stabilise the network, as it currently is not satisfactory.  Most of my devices are accessed in the same location, except mobile phones, iPads and guest devices.

  @decoscreen

Hi, thank you very much for your feedback.

Since both Deco X50 and Deco M4 support an IoT network. I think you can enable IoT-2.4GHz only for smart home devices, then only enable 5GHz under the Main WiFi network.

After that, you can connect the main laptop only to the main Network SSID.

By the way, apart from the main Intel laptop, how about other mobile devices near the satellite Deco units? Are they also about ~30mbps?

(Can I have the model number of these devices?)

Could you also help me submit the Deco APP log:How to submit Deco APP log

I'll also follow up on your case via email so that I can escalate it to the senior engineer for further analysis.

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @decoscreen

Many thanks for raising the ticket.

I've not really got any smart home devices, only one plug that I use when leaving the house unoccupied.

I've submitted the App Log.

The two inactive M4R units are not connected, as I've 'bought' from Amazon 2 X50s to see if there was a significant improvement, which so far doesn't seem to be.

Gallery X50 usually has 1 Laptop, Dell Inspiron, relatively recent and 1 iPhone 13.  iPhone 13 is struggling to connect to 5GHz.

Bar (M4R) has 2-3 cable connections Apple TV, HiFi unit + Firestick Wifi

Office X50 also has 2-3 cable connections, Apple TV x 2, HiFi. + Firestick Wifi

The speed drop and switching connections is mainly detected through Apple iPhones (13 and 11Pro), iPAd and PCs. I 've disconnected the changing Mac address in the iOS, but there are still problems in connectivity.

The PCs as well seem to disconnect almost immediately if preference is set to 5Ghz
