S7 wont connect to closer deco unit. Keeps going to furthest away
Have set the preferred connection as the correct closer deco but the s7 keeps connecting to a deco really far away with poor connection. The closer one is a newer triband model but should still work no?

Not sure I understand your problem but, the S7 will always connect to another deco as long as both decos are close enough to connect to each other.
Or
Are you saying you set a device to connect to one deco but it's connecting to a different deco?

yes. The latter. I've set the preferred connection of the S7 in question to the a closely located XE75 but the S7 keeps connection wirelessly to a distant S7. Ethernet backhaul isnt an option here.

So your trying to force the 1st S7 to connect to the XE75 but the 1st S7 is connecting to the 2nd S7
When you bought the S7 deco was it a pack of 2? If so that would explain why its connecting to the 2nd S7 when you buy them in a pack of 2 or 3 they are set to auto connect to each other
Only way to stop it would be to remove the 2nd S7 or make the Xe75 pro the main but even then it still might be one S7 connection to another
