Model: RE505X
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Set up the RE505X range extender using WPS as per instructions. This took several attemps and a reset before it appeared to be successful. I then relocated the extende and waited for it to stabalise which took severall minutes. At this point all devices registered in the Tether app disappeared and when I tried to login to the Router web page in a browser it said it was disconnected, which was incorrect. I powere off the RE505X and and the router and other apps returned to normal. Is there something I've missed? I followed the installation instructions but whatever I try this extender messes up my whole network. I have an RE200 which works well so I can only assume the RE505X is faulty.

Hello @seoras1 ,

Welcome to our community.

Please tell me if your network topology diagram is as follows:

ISP modem—router )))((( RE500X

(Note: — stands for wired connection,)))((( stands for wireless connection )

What are the firmware and hardware versions of your router and extender? Please refer to How to find the hardware and firmware version of my TP-Link device.

When did you buy the extender? Or is it a brand new extender? Have you changed any settings recently?

In addition, have you tried the other two ways to set up the extender? Here is a complete setup video for your reference:  How to set up a TP-Link Range Extender

@seoras1 Update: Decided to have one more attempt. Finally got the RE505X to connect to the router and come online, unfortunately only on the 2.4GHz channel. I changed the 5GHz channel from auto to 48 on the router, as per recommended fixes for this issue. Unfortunately this caused the RE505X to fail to connect once again and throw my router (AX53) and RE200 off of the tether app which meant I couldn't log into the router again. After powering down the RE505X the router and RE200 reappeared and everything was back to normal. Just to confirm, the RE200 extender works flawlessly on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz channels and causes no issues. I can only conclude that this RE505X unit is faulty. I did read some Reddit threads suggesting there was a firmware issue with this model.

Re:Set up RE505X problems. It disconnects all devices

Hi  @Joseph-TP

Yes, my network topology is as you describe, ISP modem—router )))((( RE500X

The router is an Archer AX53: Firmware ver 1.5.4 Build 20250926 rel.87654(4555) (up to date)

The RE200 extender: Firmware ver 1.0.8 Build 20210916 Rel. 59255 (up to date)

Unfortunately I cannot provide the information for the RE505X unit as I have returned it as faulty. It was bought new last week from Amazon.uk

I did not change any settings in the RE505X and I tried all the connection methods with varying outcomes, the best was the RE505X connected to the network but only on the 2.4GHz channel, I could not get it to connect to the 5GHz channel.

The worst outcome was: After setup the RE505X was relocated and powered on and all devices on the network (Archer AX53, RE200 & RE505X) disappeared from the Tether app and I was unable to connect to the router web interface which reported it was disconnected, which was not true. After the RE505X was powered off The Archer AX53 and the RE200 reappeared in the Tether app and I was able to login to the webpage interface.

I spent two days on this, numerous web searches, forums, Reddit treads but I eventually gave up. This should not have been this difficult and I have to assume the unit was faulty.

Many thanks for your response

Cheers

Seoras
