I purchased a WiFi range extender about 5 or 6 months ago and it's been working great until about a week ago.

All of a sudden it just lost connection to the main router.

I have been fighting with this thing for 2 hours. The initial set-up months ago was very smooth, maybe done in 5 minutes, but this time... I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

I reset the extender 2 or 3 times. I am using the Tether app, because it was very helpful during initial setup. But now, I get as far as "Set Device Password: You will need this password to access and manage your device."

No matter what password I enter - my TP link account password, the password of the router, random weak passwords, random strong passwords, it always gives the same error.

"Failed. Please avoid entering overly long or special characters. If the problem persists, contact our technical support."

There's a link to technical support, but it doesn't work. I tried the shortest password the system would allow, with only letters and numbers, and it just won't work.

What am I doing wrong??

Hi,

If you have your mobile device set to install app updates automatically whenever there is a new version, then the Tether app on your device has likely been updated a few times in the last 5 or 6 months. So, what worked back then must not necessarily still work now, unfortunately.

Anyway, have a look at this thread https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/849868 and try the mentioned solutions.

Neither link http://tplinkrepeater.net/ nor http://192.168.0.254 are loading for me. I tried on my native WiFi, the WiFi of the extender, and mobile data and it's not loading.

Is the link http://192.168.0.254 specific to the model in the other thread? Is there one that might work for my model?

http://192.168.0.254 should be the default IP address of any TP-Link range extender that is either brand new or has just been reset. Of course you need to be connected to the RE190's wireless network, which reverts to the name "TP-Link_Extender" after a reset.

One thing you have to pay attention to is that your client device actually stays connected to "TP-Link_Extender" during the setup process. Many modern client devices have the annoying behavior that they automatically disconnect themselves from Wi-Fi networks that do not provide a connection to the Internet and instead connect to another nearby Wi-Fi network for which they know the login password.
