Hi Folks,

I have plugged an  TL-PA8010PA powerline adapter directly into my router using the ethernet cable.  The only room in my house that wifi won't reach (it does a bit, but not so well as everywhere else) from my router is the kitchen, so I put the other TL-PA8010PA in the kitchen and connected an RE550 mesh extender to it with an ethernet cable.

So, I'm thinking that the network will extend from the router (FREDXYZ) through the powerline adapters, via the ring main, to the kitchen and then into the mesh adapter and spread wifi love and happiness into my kitchen.

It does, well sort of.  It has created a new network name in the kitchen - FREDXYZ_EXT. Which means I have to disconnect from FREDXYZ and connect to FREDXYZ_EXT to maintain wifi on my phone or laptop, if I move from any room to the kitchen, which is damn silly, has achieved nothing and cost me lots of tenners.

Am I missing something?

Hi,

Yes.

TP-Link hasn't implemented "EasyMesh Network via Ethernet Backhaul" into the RE550 yet. This means the RE550 cannot build an EasyMesh network via the TL-PA8010P Powerline adapters.

Currently the RE550 can only build a Mesh via wireless connection, provided the Wi-Fi router supports "OneMesh" or "EasyMesh".

What you could do as a workaround is to use the RE550 as a wireless access point (i.e. switch it's "Mode" to "Access Point Mode").
Once switched to Access Point Mode go to the RE550's wireless settings menu and manually rename the network SSID(s) from "FREDXYZ_EXT" to "FREDXYZ". (i.e. make them identical to the router's)
This is still not a real Mesh and the roaming will solely rely on your client devices. So, depending on how "smart" your laptop and phone are they might or might not automatically switch between the router's and the extender's Wi-Fi.
