I'm just posting this because I've really had my trust in tplink hurt. I bought this BE230 wifi 7 router as an upgrade and reading the sales info I thought I was buying a good product. But after many months of frustration with slow wifi and wifi drop outs and countless hours and attempts to try and fix it, I'm left realizing this router has problems. Especially after deep diving user reports on platforms like Reddit who also have issues. I've been a TPlink customer for many years but I don't think I can trust this brand anymore.

May I know the hardware and firmware version of your router? When did you buy the router? You mentioned slow Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi dropouts.

Are the poor performance mainly due to these two aspects? What about the wired connection?

 

Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help.

For the WiFi dropout and unstable connection:

First, log into the web interface of the router (http://tplinkwifi.net), go to Advanced > System > Firmware Update and make sure the firmware is up to date.
Since you're experiencing wireless client devices dropping or becoming unstable:
1. Make sure the router is properly placed • it should be in an open area instead of inside a cabinet or shelf.
2. In the web interface, go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, and try different Wi-Fi channels to avoid nearby interference. Additionally, for 2.4GHz wireless client devices, set the 2.4GHz channel width to 20MHz. For 5GHz wireless client devices, set the 5GHz channel width to 80MHz or 40MHz to avoid interference.
3. Make sure the client devices are not included in any Parental Control profiles.
4. Make sure the network adapter drivers, system, or firmware on the affected client devices (e.g., PC, phone, or smart devices) are up to date.

 


For the slow WiFi speed:

To accurately test your Internet speed:
• Use https://www.speedtest.net or the Speedtest app to test speed
• First, verify the max speed of your ISP by connecting your PC directly to the ISP modem and test speed on the PC
• To test the wired (Ethernet) speed of your router, connect the PC directly to one of the LAN ports of the router, ensuring all Ethernet cables are CAT5E or higher
• When testing wireless speed, connect your phone/laptop to the high-speed network (5G/6G) instead of 2.4G. To reach maximum throughput over wireless, put the phone/laptop next to the router.

Tips to improve your router's speed:
1. Log in to the web interface (http://tplinkwifi.net), go to Advanced > QoS, and make sure QoS is disabled.
2. Open the Tether app, go to Parental Control, and ensure no parental control profile is configured.
3. If wireless speed is slower than expected, go to the web interface > Advanced > Wireless Settings to change the 5GHz Wi-Fi channel. Test different channels to find the best one for your environment.
4. Go to the web interface > Advanced > NAT Forwarding > UPNP to disable UPNP, and go to Advanced > Security to disable SIP ALG. These features may affect Wi-Fi performance and speedtest results.
5. Speedtest by Ookla allows you to select different servers • try other speedtest servers, as some servers may provide better speeds.

Hi - yes the WiFi specifically is the biggest issue. Other aspects are good mostly. The BE230 seems to consistently fail miserably with regards to bufferbloat and there is no SQM available. The QoS function does not help. The router is up-to-date for the firmware. I've tested the Wifi with multiple devices and programs/apps. The WiFi ability is just very poor. I've tested different channels etc. No parental profiles are in use. The router is situated centrally in the house, in an open room. Some devices are within 15ft of the router and still the WiFi is poor. A hard wired RJ45 connection is fine. I lived with this poor performance for some time now and have, off and on, spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to fix it. My conclusion is that the BE230 just isn't good for its WiFi 7 performance. There is no way to fix it other than buying another router which I don't feel I should have to have my money wasted on the BE230 and also makes me extremely hesitant to buy another TPlink router.

May I know if your network topology diagram is as follows:

ISP modem—BE230)))((( client devices

(Note: — stands for wired connection,)))((( stands for wireless connection )

Have you tested the wireless connectivity of other devices? For example, your modem or your old router, to confirm the stability of your wireless environment.

 

Did you notice the previous firmware version? Was it 1.1.2 or 1.2.1? For Bufferbloat, you might want to try this firmware: Archer BE230_V1/1.20_1.2.1 Build 20250821(Beta Firmware)
