Model: TL-WPA8630P KIT
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.0.6 Build 20240207 Rel.64435

Hello all,

Just a quick question:

I currently have a TL-WPA8630P KIT, with the main adapter connected to my router and the second adapter installed in one of the rooms.

If I purchase a TL-PA9020P KIT, can I connect one adapter to the router as well and place the other adapter in a different room, allowing it to achieve its theoretical 2000 Mbps Powerline speed?

Or would its performance be limited because there is already a TL-WPA8630P adapter connected in the house?

Thank you in advance

Hello @hf_atl ,

Welcome to our community.

There are two important points to be aware of here:

1. Mixing different series is not recommended
The TL-WPA8630P belongs to the TL-(W)PA8xxx series, while the TL-PA9020P belongs to the TL-(W)PA9xxx series. These are considered different series of powerline devices. While they may technically connect (both use HomePlugAV technology), TP-Link strongly recommends using the same series within one powerline network. Mixing different series can result in performance degradation and potential compatibility issues. If you already own a TL-WPA8630P KIT, it would be better to expand with additional TL-(W)PA8xxx devices. You can refer to this page for more details: Are the TP-Link powerline adapters compatible with each other?

2. Speed will be limited by the lowest-spec device
Even if the two devices do connect, when pairing different models in the same network, the maximum theoretical Powerline Rate defaults to the lower model's limit. This means the TL-PA9020P would not be able to achieve anywhere near its 2000 Mbps theoretical speed in a mixed setup. For more details on expected speeds: Explanation about the Powerline Rate and Actual speed of the Powerline Adapters

In short, the TL-PA9020P KIT would not perform as intended alongside your existing TL-WPA8630P KIT. If you're looking to expand your current network, adding a TL-(W)PA8xxx device would be the better choice. If you want to upgrade to the 9xxx series for better performance, you would ideally replace all devices in the network with the new series rather than mixing them.
