Model : TD-W8950N

I have an old Zyxel modem that connects to the internet behind a Zywall 5 router, but the modem is playing up so I thought I'd replace it with a TP-Link TD-W8950N.

I've replicated the setup of the Zyxel modem on the TD-W8950N, but when I put it in place I can't even ping the TD-W8950N from the LAN.

I suspect the problem is that in the NAT menu of the Zyxel modem there is an 'All ports' rule set to NAT everything (that does not have otherwise specified NAT rules) to the WAN interface of the Zywall 5. However, I can find so such option in the TD-W8950N.

Am I correct that this will be the problem - and can I resolve it with this particular modem or do I need another model?

Kind of your ISP? Do you have internet access from W8950 or not?

There is not a problem with the W8950 connecting to the internet. The issue is I can't even ping the LAN interface of the W8950 from inside the LAN - e.g. the server in the diagram below:

Server (192.168.16.1) ---> Zywall 5 LAN (192.168.16.254) ---> Zywall 5 WAN (192.168.17.1) ---> TP-Link W8950 LAN (192.168.17.154) ---> Internet (ADSL)

Now with the Zyxel modem I have no problems - but the Zyxel does have a default 'All ports' NAT rule that is pointed to the router's WAN interface (192.168.17.1). I can see no such option for the TP-Link.

Yes - that's what the Zywall router is there for. There is also a DMZ on yet another subnet off the Zywall, and the Zywall handles all the routing.

The fact is that with the Zyxel modem in place I can ping it (192.168.17.254) from the LAN (the server on 192.168.1.1). But with the TP-Link W8950 acting as the modem on 192.168.17.254, I can't ping it from the LAN.

So I know the Zywall is routing correctly. It just seems that the the WD8950 is receiving the pings and doesn't know where to send the replies back - and I suspect this is because the Zyxel modem has this default 'All ports' NAT rule that points to the WAN IP address of the Zywall router. There doesn't seem to be any such option for the WD8950.

I might just have to end up using another Zyxel modem to replace the existing one, but they are much more expensive and I though I could just get away with using a cheap TP-Link.
