Archer D7 to pure modem and Edgrouter Lite for routing

Hi guys,
I need to start getting my head round an Edgerouter Lite for a client install and want to play with it at home. I'd like to turn off all routing and DHCP on my Archer D7 so its just a pure modem and then set up routing and DHCP on the Edgerouter Lite which I would connect on the WAN port to the D7. On the D7 do I have to delete the WAN interface or do I have to set static routing under the Advanced Routing menu option? Any tips?
