Helle there.

I just bought an Archer c5400. I'm trying to configure openVPN to use port 443 due to firewall restrictions but the web interface will only allow me to use a high port (>1024). Is there any way to circumvent this restriction besides configuring my VPN on another box?

Sorry for you my friend! Same problem on my Archer C6. I am very upset for that. I hope someone is working on it for us.

Sadly other than thier saying that they will forward the request to their engineering / product team about enabling support for OpenVPN port 443 on their routers is all we got. My previous router, an ASUS, supported OpenVPN port 443 as an option and worked very well until I needed to replace it. If ASUS can setup their routers to support OpenVPN port 443 and not conflict with port forwarding and firewall rules TP-Link should be able to do the same, I would think.
