Hi everyone, my first post here !

 

I am having an issue with replacing a TL-PA4020P (AV500) adapter with a supposedly better TL-PA8030P (AV1200) adapter resulted in much slower speeds (from ~40Mbps to ~12Mbps).

 

I have been a happy owner of TP-Link Powerline products since 2014, with just the occasional issue, and quickly resolved by either firmware update, understanding how powerline works and adjusting my setup, etc. I mostly used AV500/600 adapters, such as TL-PA4020P, and they worked quite well. Please understand that I am a quite advanced user, and know my way around network and software.

 

I have recently upgraded my internet provider speed, from 100Mbps to 500Mbps, and replaced my aging router from the provider with a new ASUS. All was setup nicely, and working great. Since my internet speed was now above the 100Mbs of the Powerline ethernet adapter ports, I decided to invest on an upgrade.


So I bought 4 adapters TL-PA8030P (AV1200) to replace my older TL-PA4020P adapters. First I replaced the adapter connected to the router with a new one. It was automatically detected as having a Gigabit port, and worked great. Then I replaced another of the AV500 adapters with a new AV1200 adapter, and internet speeds at that adapter increased quite well (more than doubled). Keep in mind that even speeds on the older AV500 adapters improved nicely!!

 

Today I replaced one more of the AV500 adapters with a AV1200 one, and I was quite frustrated to see that the internet speed dropped from ~40Mbps to ~12Mbps. This was with exactly the same setup as before replacing the adapter. Same test done, same router, same network, same computer connected, same everything. So I thought it must be something with the current internet connection, so I put back the AV500 adapter, and the speeds increased immediately to 40Mbps. I tested replacing it with the AV1200 adapter again, and speeds dropped down to 12Mbps again ! Nothing else changed except replacing the adapter. So now I am back working with the AV500 adapter, and I am frustrated with two AV1200 adapters that are actually hurting my internet speeds compared to the AV500!

 

Could someone provide me with some help with this, or give me some suggestions on how to fix it ? I am sharing a TP-Link utility screenshot with my setup, and highlighted the AV500 adapter that I tried to replace with a supposedly better AV1200.

Thank you for your feedback, and it seems your reply is the one that seems to match the measurements, the extra "sensitiveness" of the AV1200/1300 adapters to changes in the electrical flow. But it seems to be really specific and dependent on the eletrical device causing the issues.

 

I followed your suggestion, taking out all AV500 adapters and only using AV1300 adapters.

 

Removing all AV500 adapters and having turned off the computer which caused the problem in the AV1300 adapter:

Next, I turned on the computer connected to the above adapter through the passthrough outlet of the adapter (nothing else changed):

 

 

 

Internet download speeds dropped like before. So it is my conclusion that the AV1300 adapter (and I tested with two different units to make sure it was not a defective unit) is MUCH MORE sensitive to what is connected to its power outlet that the AV500 adapters.

 

For now I will need to keep the AV500 in that outlet, but going forward I will check which power supply my kid's computer uses (it's in another house division, similarly using an AV1300 but with no issues) and consider replacing the problematic computer's power supply and then test it all again.

 

I hope that my issues and my tests may help someone else in a similar situation. Thank you all for your feedback.

That doesn't seem to be an isolated case.

 

I have a WAP7510 kit plus a couple of PA7020Ps and all used to work properly. At certain point, during one week the whole powerline network turned out really unstable, slow and with loss of connectivity between the adapter (7010) and the extender, which was the most important for me, since it was providing internet for my office, now that I'm on home-office mode.

 

I brought over a WPA8630P kit that I had in other apartment, replaced the 7510 kit with it, in the exact same locations, and the powerline speed was slower with the new ones that the old ones. Even worse, the PA7020P didn't want to pair with the 8010P from the WPA8630 kit.

 

Something's fishy with those 8x series adapters

Hi @jpasan,

 

Yes, the 8x series to me has some issues. After a couple of hours of testing (different computers, sockets, adapters, etc...) I finally identified a pattern in my case.

 

The AV500 adapter which I wanted to replace is in a wall socket to which a computer and monitor are getting their power from (through the adapter's socket).

Both that computer and another computer are connected to the network through that adapter. Once I replaced the AV500 with the "better" AV1200 one, speed decreased tremendously, all other factors exactly the same!

 

So, in one of my tests, I turned off the computer which is also powered from that wall socket, and tested the speed in the computer which is powered through another wall socket. Low and behold, speeds were back up! So to understand if it was a case of the two computers somehow causing the AV1200 adapter to have issues, I got my laptop and connected it to the adapter too. Speed still fast.

 

I then simply turned on the computer which is connected through the adapter's socket, and speeds immediately dropped a lot (right after just clicking on the power button). So, in this case, it seems the power socket passthrough on the AV1200 is MUCH MORE sensitive than on the AV500, OR for some reason the guilty computer's power source is wrecking havoc with the AV1200 adapter, but not with the AV500.

 

I then got the AV1200 adapter and went to my son's room, where I did an almost equal replacement (his AV500 for the new AV1200, and his computer is also powered through the adapter outlet) and I had no speed drops.

 

So, I don't know if this helps you, but I will keep the AV500 in the computer that negatively affects the AV1200 speeds until I can figure out if it is the power source or something else, until I can replace it with the AV1200 and get improved speeds.

 

As a side note, I bought 4 AV1200 adapters (2 kits of two adapters), same reference, but one kit's box says AV1200 while the other one says AV1300 :-)

Hi there

 

I have read all of your tests, the powerline adapter's speed would indeed be interfered by other electronic devices.

AV1200/AV1300 devices use Home Plug AV2 instead of AV600's HomePlug AV, so it has a wider frequency range, which means, AV1200/AV1300 devices are easier to interfere with.

Also, when higher speed models are using with lower speed models, its speed would drop accordingly, but I'm not sure if this is the reason why your AV1300's speed are slower.

 

I have a few suggestions for you: 

1. Unplug all of your AV600/AV500 devices, only use the 8030P ones in your house, see if the speed improves.

2. If you remove those large electronic devices from your power grid, will the powerline speed showing in tpplc utility improve?

Thanks for your initial feedback, it was good to try it that way to be sure.

 

As for your professional support, they only asked me if I had the latest firmware and reset the adapters...

From this topic I can imagine that you already understand that it was my very first check that I did, before raising any support ticket :-)

I've posted this a few mins ago in several topics but want to add my issue here as well:

 

I'm also having issues after replacing the TL-WPA4220 with the TP-PA8033P.   (replaced, so i took out the 4220 and put in the 8033)

I dropped in speed (on the same powersockets as before) in 10 fold.

From 65Mbit to 6Mbit on the LAN of the adapter.

 

Tried out several power sockets and everywhere its the same, also after resets and newer firmware is not available anywhere.

Connected my older TL-WPA4220 and i have directly 65+ Mbit again....

 

I found back in other forum topics that many people complain about the later TP-Link powerline adapters, they seem not to work as the older versions do.

TP link support is not coming back to people, only asking to test it on different power sockets etc and then nothing anymore.

It gets blamed on peoples electricity lines / disturbance, but as many people here can see... older TP link powerline adapters DO work.
