I use an TP-LINK ArcherC6 as my primary router with a Netgear WNR612 configured as a repeater to extend the reach of the WiFi signal.

 

This is set up on the 2.4GHz band using the WDS bridging feature.

 

Both routers are manually set to the same Channel (6)

 

I use the wireless schedule feature to turn off the WiFi signal for 6 hours at night from 12:00 midnight to 6:00 AM. After the WiFi resumes in the morning, the WDS does not recover on the Archer C6. Consequently, the Netgear repeater is disconnected from the internet and is rendered useless.

 

Every time, I have to manually log in to the TP-LINK router settings homepage and toggle the settings to revive the WDS function. This is so frustrating to do every day.

 

Strangely, I noticed that in System parameters, WDS bridging is enabled but the status says WDS is Disabled. Refer composite screenshot below.

 

Hope a future firmware upgrade solves this issue.

Hello,

 

When you are using the Netgear WNR612 to extend the wireless of the C6, there is no need to enable WDS bridging on the C6 and you should leave it disabled. When enabling WDS bridging on the C6, we use it to extend another host wireless network but not to be the Wi-Fi source.

 

As per the issue you described, it is suggested to contact the Netgear support to check if there is any setting needs to be modified to connect to the original wireless automatically when it is restarted.

I'm a bit curious on how to set up a repeater function without using WDS. Is there any other way to configure a router as repeater for the Archer C6 ?

 

The only way I found was to enable the WDS function on Archer C6.

 

Could you tell me how a second router can be configured as a repeater connecting to the Archer C6 ?

 

And my question with the Archer C6 is still open - Why does WDS show as disabled in the Status page when it is turned on inside System Parameters ?

Hello,

 

As per your description, you are using the Netgear WNR612 router to extend the wireless network of the C6, but not using the C6 as an extender, so there is no need to change any setting on the C6 nor enabling the WDS.

 

What you need to do is enabling similar features as WDS on the Netgear WNR612 and it will connect to the C6 wirelessly. But if you don't know how to do that, it is suggested to contact the Netgear support.

If you notice, in my original post, I have clearly mentioned that I am already able to successfully bridge both routers and extend the wireless signal.

 

Archer C6 is configured as the main router (base station) and the Netgear WNR612 connects to it though WDS bridging function ( Netgear router is configured as wireless repeater and the MAC ID of the Archer C6 is entered in the base station field ).

 

In the Archer C6 WDS bridging menu, the Netgear router is added through the "Survey" option.

 

For this, obviously WDS has to be enabled on both routers so that the Archer C6 knows that the Netgear WNR612 is connecting to it and vice versa. This is not a problem and functions well.

 

The exact issue is that in the Archer C6, I use the wireless scheduling function to turn off the WiFi signal at night. When it resumes ( turns on again ) in the morning, the WDS bridging is lost in Archer C6 ( In the STATUS menu, WDS status shows "disabled" )

 

Because WDS becomes disabled in Archer C6, the better repeater can no longer connect to it.

 

However, in System Parameters of Archer C6, the WDS bridging check box is enabled. This appears to be contradictory to the WDS "disabled" message displayed in the STATUS menu.

 

The functionality I want in Archer C6 is that when the wireless signal resumes from the OFF to ON state in the morning ( as per wireless schedule feature ), the WDS bridging must also recover or automatically start so that the repeater can connect to the Archer C6.
