Model: Adapter
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.0 Build 20191209 Rel. 52814

Hello,

Just bought an RE455 extender. I would like to do a firmware update but the manuals suggest to do that hard wired but there is no info on how to proceed. Any advice on how to do this?

BTW I opted to buy an RE455 over an RE450 hoping that it would support OneMesh ... bad luck ... besides RE450 V4 does not seem to exists in Europe either, I can only trace V3 devices?

TIA

  @Solla-topee

My LAN subnet is 192.168.1.x ... the default subnet for the native extender is 192.168.0.x ... so I'm not seeing the thing unless I do a WPS connect so it gets a DHCP IP address in my LAN ... and the web link address never worked for me, not even now after having the extender hard wired to my LAN subnet. But I solved the problem. Thanks.

  @Regulus I suppose the solution is to put the RE455 in AP mode and then doing the FW update via the ethernet cable?

Hello   @Regulus

Updating firmware itself does not require  Internet connection on the range extender.

1. To update firmware though wired connection,   you can download firmware to computer first , then connect PC-- range extender via Ethernet ( PC has no internet) and login web page to update firmware.

2. It is also fine to update firmware through wireless but make sure you did not accidentally disconnect wifi during the update process.

As wired is more stable, it is more recommended.

For RE450 OneMesh feature, only RE450 V4 and above version supports Onemesh, you may also consider another model if there isn't V4 found in the local store.

  @Solla-topee

Thanks for the information. Can you elaborate on why the PC/laptop should be disconnected from "the internet"? That may completely mess up all IP addresses even at LAN level? Is one supposed to install an "ad hoc" 1:1 connection computer<-> extender with fixed IP addresses? The native choice of 192.168.0.254 is a pain for anyone who is not on a 192.168.0.0 subnet!

I have flashed 100's of IT equipment with new firmware but there was never a reason to disconnect it from the internet.

I know about the onemesh compatible devices, did my homework first. Switching to Netgear is an option, indeed LOL! But I have no intention to buy a whole stock of extenders (although I have a Nighthawk tri-band EX7500 as well smiley).

 Hello  @Regulus

Yes, we can update firmware for range extender when RE & PC has internet as well.

For example:  Router 192.168.1.1 <Wireless>Range Extender 192.168.1.X <Ethernet> PC 192.168.1.5

Range extender will receive an IP address from router, you can find range extender's IP address on router DHCP client list, and use that IP address to login web page of extender and upgrade firmware for it.

For some new models of range extender, you can also do an online upgrade through wireless for range extender on the Tp-Link Tether app.

Hello   @Regulus

Glad to know you solve the problem.

After you set up the range extender, router will allocate a new IP address for the range extender, and that new IP address can be found on router DHCP client list

It would be easier to use the new IP address of range extender to login its web page. If your router is on 192.168.1.X subnet, it will assist an IP address 192.168.1.X for range extender

here is an example:FAQ: How to use my Range Extender properly if your range extender is configured correctly?
