Since updating to Windows 11 22H2, I'm getting heavy connection issues with the UB500 Bluetooth 5.0 dongle.
Issue description
- Pairing a new headphone (tested with Apple AirPods 2 and Beats Solo), works in most cases. But establishing the connection is very slow. After choosing the headphone to connect, it shows almost immediately "connected", but then takes about 30 seconds, until it shows the additional "Music connected" and I can hear the computer's audio.
- When trying to re-connect an already paired headphone, the connection never succeeds.
The attempt fails after some time with the error message: "Setup has been blocked due to a group policy".
I have to remove (un-pair) the device from the bluetooth settings, then set the headphone to pairing mode, and then pair again.
What I tested so far
- Uninstall the dongle using the device manager
- Disable energy save mode in device diver settings
- Download the latest driver (from 2021) from the support page, and install again
- Reboot system
- Swtich USB port
Hints
- Doing some research leaded to the following results. The driver might need to add some policies, so that windows can handle the pairing correctly.
- See: https://www.techzine.eu/news/devices/75591/microsoft-releases-a-fix-for-bluetooth-problem-causing-blue-screens/
- See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/mdm/policy-csp-bluetooth#bluetooth-servicesallowedlist
- When I check the ServicesAllowedList in my registry, I actually have no entries.
- Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Bluetooth\ServicesAllowedList
- Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Bluetooth\ServicesAllowedList

After trying so many things eventually got rid of the issue by restarting bluetooth services.
