I'm getting horrible transfer speeds to and from media connected to the router's USB port when using the SMB-protocol. While I typically get speeds around 90 - 110 MB/s (720 Mbit/s - 880 Mbit/s) between my Windows workstation and Linux SMB-server, on the same network the AX55 tops out around 15MB/s (120Mbit/s), and usually stays around 10MB/s (80 Mbit/s).

 

Albeit speeds around 100 MB/s are to be considered unusually good for SMB, 15MB/s is simply unacceptable and most definitely unusable. I might as well share my external drives via the Linux server's USB 2.0-port and still get far better performance.

 

Is there anything that can be done?

I would agree 10MB/s is not a good speed when it comes to a USB 3.0 port, but let me know more details and we will see if this can be improved.

 

When you are testing the transfer speed of the USB port of the AX55, how is the Windows workstation or computer connected to the AX55, via a LAN cable or wireless? How about the link speed? Be aware that the transfer speed of the USB port would also be limited and affected if the link speed is not good. If the computer is connected to the wireless of the AX55, make sure it's connected to the 5G network and gets a good link speed. It's also suggested to test the speed by connecting the computer to the AX55 via a wired cable.

 

What kind of USB drive you are plugging into the USB port? How about its format? Ensure its file system is one of FAT32/exFAT/NTFS/HFS+. If possible, test with another USB drive or HDD.

  @Kevin_Z Hi Kevin_Z, and thanks for your reply. I'll try to summarize:

 

The AX55 is connected via cable to an Ubuntu Server, which in turn serves the rest of the LAN primarily via WiFi (5GHz and 2.4GHz depending on client).

 

I've connected to the AX55 using a Win10 desktop on the 5GHz band. When connecting from that same desktop to my Ubuntu server's SMB-server, I get speeds around 75 - 110MB/s (typically consistent speeds around 85MB/s - 90MB/s) When connected to the router's SMB server, the speed drops to 10 - 15MB/s.

 

I've also tried transfers between the Ubuntu server (which is connected to the router via cable) and the AX55, with essentially the same results.

 

I've tested different USB3.0 (also USB2.0) sticks and different USB-HDD's connected via an USB3.0 interface, with negligable to no difference. It might also be worth noting that I get speeds around 40MB/s from the Ubuntu server's USB2.0 port when connecting to it via SMB(!), which would be 267% to 400% faster than the speeds the AX55's USB3.0 port manage to deliver.

 

And yes, filesystems tested - just about every filesystem but ext4, which the router for some reason doesn't support (well, obviously not quite every filesystem): NTFS, FAT32 and exFAT.

 

In my opinion, this is some sort of firmware issue - if that's where the SMB config is hidden on the AX55.

I personally cannot confirm whether there is a router firmware or memory limitation on the USB read and write speed, but I would like to have a specialist look into this further via email. Please check your registered email box and follow it up.
