Model: Deco X68
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.4 Build 20230404 Rel. 55798

I have two Deco X68's currently set to 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi and I am in Australia.

The reason I can't have the X68's set to 5GHz only, is that I have 2 x Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro's that do not see the X68's when they are set to 5GHz only (they work fine on 2.4GHz), and I know the 5GHz Wi-Fi signal level is good there, because my other devices (iPhone and iPad) that I use to set them up have a 5Ghz signal level of around -35 to -45dBm at those locations.

I suspect the reason for this is because according to the Ring website the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro connects at 5GHz on Channel 52 and above.

Google "What to do when your Floodlight Cam Wired Pro has trouble connecting to 5GHz wifi" to get you to the Ring Support page relevant to this issue.

I note similar posts on this forum related to the automatically selected 5Ghz channels, so this is just adding further to those posts.

Wikipedia lists the 5GHz 802.11 Wi-Fi channels (Google "wikipedia List of WLAN channels").

You can see in the Wikipedia article that there are "4 sub-bands" of channels, for example CH32 to CH48, CH50 to CH68, CH96 to CH144, CH149 to CH177.

When i do the "Network Optimization" scan using the DECO app, it selects Ch40 for 5GHz_1 WiFi and CH149 for 5GHz_2 WiFi (I assume that's the back haul channel).

Now i don't know if both 5GHz_1 WiFi and 5GHz_21 WiFi channels have the physical RF hardware to access all those 5Ghz channels, or if 5GHz_1 WiFi is only capable of accessing the low end of the channel band, and 5GHz_2 WiFi is only capable of the high end of the channel band. If that's the case, end of story; but if not, and its a matter of software configuration, then there is hope yet.

So hence my "Feature Request" is, would it be possible in some future firmware update, to allow the user to be able to select one of those sub-bands of the available channels to utilize for 5Ghz_1 WiFi 1 and possibly even 5GHz_2 WiFi?

I'm thinking, that the user would go into the Deco Apps Advanced Wi-Fi settings where the Band is currently configured, and that there might be under that, a drop down box option with 4 sub-band options for 5GHz_1 WiFi, and maybe even a second one for 5GHz_2 WiFi.

For example, in my scenario, if the other Wi-Fi devices I use don't care which 5GHz Wi-Fi channels they use, but my Ring devices will only connect from Channel 52+, then I would like to be able select the "CH50 to CH68" 5GHz sub-band for 5GHz_1 WiFi.

  @Brizzyboy

Hi, welcome to the community.

Before using Deco X68, Have you used any other brands of router whose 5ghz is on channel 52+ and works well with Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro as well as other 5Ghz clients?

Channels 50-68 are DFS channels that share the spectrum with Weather Radar and Radar systems(I see Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro uses Radar-powered precision maybe it is why it has to connect to 5ghz over channel 52+). So when WIFI devices listened for radar events, they will either stop using the channels or automatically move off other channels. In other words, Wi-Fi devices would be quite unstable when working on the DFS channels. Most mobile devices use either band 1(channels 36-48) or band 4(149-165) on 5Ghz WiFi. Personally, I do think many Wi-Fi clients will avoid DFS channels as well.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Thanks for your response David.

The existing Optusnet Sagem F@ast modem router that I have, that the 2 x DECO X68's are acting as Wi-Fi Access points for, also has 5GHz Wi-Fi, however although there is some manual channel selection, its also not the full 5GHz Wi-Fi band, and only allows manual 5Ghz channel selection between ch32 an ch48.

Weather radars, or any radar  for that matter are very few and far between, so whilst the band may be shared with radar its probably not a factor for most of the population.

I guess what I am getting at is, it would be more user friendly to allow the user to make the choice of what 5GHz sub-band they would prefer to use, rather than force only a small segment of channel on them.

Ive also dropped a similar request into the Ring Community forum as well on this same issue, in an attempt to tackle it from both ends.

So here we have the situation of a popular consumer home WiFi network manufacturer (TP-Link), and a popular WiFi security camera manufacturer (Ring), and their equipment is not compatible in the 5GHz wifi band. Would it make sense that one or the other, at least consider a change to their Wi-Fi configuration slightly to allow them to play together nicely?
