Model: Archer AX55
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.6 Build 20231130 rel36135

Because of the very limited network management tools, non-existent QoS and poor parental control(s?), I bought a TP-Link router, praised all over the internet for its excellent performance and providing me all options for keeping my network and teenage gamers under control.

Unfortunately, in Belgium VDSL is controlled by Proximus and allows only their own VDSL modem or the FritzBox. I normally have 100Mb download an 40Mb upload.

It is not possible to configure the Fritz to work in bridge mode, so the only way to create a setup where my Archer initiates the PPPOE connection and is the gateway without creating double NAT, is putting the Fritz into PPPOE Passthrough.
that works and connection is stable, but I noticed lagging and when checking my DSL connection the speed dropped to 70Mb down and 30Mb up.

can someone tell me what might be the reason of this sudden "downshift" of my internet connection speed? Is there something wrong with the way I constructed my internet gateway?

To avoid the double NAT you could also let your Fritz work in modem router mode and configure AX55 in AP mode (Case 1) - try this and check if there's any improvement.

thanks for your reply, but unfortunately that's no solution. I need the Parental Controls, QoS and other features that demand a router configuration instead of access point setting.

Since you can't bridge the Fritz and AX55 AP mode is not applicable, there's nothing you can do, except to check the AX55 Internet port negotiated speed:

If it's 100mbps then you should use another Fritzbox LAN port or change the ethernet cable - it should be 1000mbps.
