Hi!

I have a TL-WR902AC that I bought explicit to create a private WiFi from Hotel or other open WiFi's.

The problem I have now is that I can't obtain an IP/Connection.

It's no problem when I connect my iPhone directly top the open WiFi, it just connects and no need for password and no log in page.

Any idea of how I should solve this?

I have alos tried the router at home with my private WiFi and that works fine, not an open one though.

Regards,

esteen

  @esteen

If even changing the MAC address doesn't help, then I don't what would.

Fact is that operators (or administrators) of networks do not like it when their users try to expand the network using their own personal networking equipment. I am not sure what is technically possible at present, but we can't rule out that they are somehow able to detect that you are trying to connect a router.

After all, if I run a small Windows program called "WifiInfoView" it is able to tell me that my "Router Model" is "TL-WR902AC" and the "Router Name" is "Wireless N Router TL-WR902AC".

Maybe one last thing you could try is to use "Static IP" instead of "Dynamic IP" (under "Network" -> "WAN")

Connect another device to the network, write down the addresses it receives via DHCP and then disconnect it. Then type those valus in the entry fields of the TL-WR902AC.

Like the example from your screenshot above:
IP Address: 172.17.22.136
Subnet Mask: 255.255.224.0
Gateway: 172.17.0.1
DNS Server: 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

Hi,

Do you see any error message?

What information does the "WAN" section of the Status menu show?

The little switch on the TL-WR902AC is in the "Share Hotspot" position, right?

  @woozle

It's just 0.0.0.0 on everything in the WAN section and no error message.

The switch is set to hotspot.

I suggest you reset the TL-WR902AC to factory defaults and then try again.

Below is what the system log of my TL-WR902AC shown when it connects to an open Wi-Fi network.

Hi!

This is what the log says.

Seems like DHCP service is unavailable but I still get IP if I connect my phone directly to the open WiFi.

Have you so far only tested this with one single open Wi-Fi network, which happens to be one of a hotel?

I wonder if they may have blacklisted the MAC address of your router.

Can you test whether it makes any difference if you modify the TL-WR902AC's WAN MAC address via the menu "Network" -> "MAC Clone"? Perhaps copy the one from your phone and just change the last digit up or down by 1.

I've tested this with my own TL-WR902AC. Changing the MAC address via "Network" -> "MAC Clone" does in fact change the MAC of the wireless WAN connection when the TL-WR902AC is in "Share Hotspot" mode.

@woozle ok, I can try that.

but if it got "black listed" with the first try I assume it will be that again with a cloned MAC.

Can it be the type of equipment that is blocked if the open WiFi can se that?

I have only tried this open WiFi so far.

@woozle I have tried to clone tha MAC but still the same problem

This is the data about the AP i'm connected to with my laptop when it's working fine.

Does that give any hint of what could be wrong?
