Region : Sweden

Model : TL-WR841N

Hardware Version : V9

Firmware Version : 3.16.9 Build 141013 Rel.61626n

ISP : bredband2 (viaeuropa)

Hi,

I recently bought a TL-WR841N router.

It works great except for one thing. My ISP uses Dynamic IP.
I have tried with and without "Get IP with Unicast DHCP"

Firmware Version:
3.16.9 Build 141013 Rel.61626n
Hardware Version:
WR841N v9 00000000

When I start my router I don't get an ip adress for wan-port.

Everytime I have to manually login to router and
do "Quick setup". After completion of Quick setup
I get ip-adress for wan.

I have tried rebooting but I get no ip-address on wan
until I do Quick setup

any suggestions?

Go to Network---WAN, release or renew and see what happens. Change WR841N's LAN IP to 192.168.2.1.
Connect your PC and modem directly to test if it works normally all the time.
If possible, attach a screenshot of the system log.

Nothing happens, I get no wan ip adress

furthermore if I have wan ip, that I got by doing quicksetup
and then do release or renew I dont get new wan ip
not until I do quick-setup again

Yeah it works normally all the time with internet connected straight to computer

If possible, attach a screenshot of the system log.

dunnow if you can read that if not check

Change WR841N's LAN IP to 192.168.2.1.

Tried it and got exactly the same behaviour

under network-->wan settings I changed Host name. Could this lead to problems?

answer: no probably not, did a factory restor == same results

I think this was working with the next to latest firmware?? The one I got on the router when I bought it.

Did you try MAC Clone? If it won't help as well, report the problem here. http://www.tp-link.com/en/Support/contact/
By the way, the picture is too smal to see it clearly and the link cannot be opened.

Yep, I tried it but my ISP doesn't require a registered MAC-adress.
It didn't help

Yeah the picture is to small hence I added link, I can reach it fine
What happens when you click it?

I have contacted support as well
they seem to think it is a hardware problem, I'm not sure I agree

I think it worked with earlier version of firmware

maybe I should downgrade?
Is there any dangers by downgrading?
it was said the upgraded firmware was more secure so maybe it is not so
good?

what do you think?

In notes of the latest firmware, it didn't mention that you cannot downgrade. In this case, it should not cause any damage.
If you doubt it is firmware issue, give a try.

I wonder if you have a DHCP issue with your ISP... Can you tell me what happens if you remove your TL-WR841N wireless router and directly connect your PC to your ISP Modem ?

Do you manage to get access to the internet ?

Another thing (if connected to the internet) would be to run a command prompt on your PC and execute "ipconfig /all" command which would tell you the information provided by your ISP (Network IP address, DNS, Default Gateway etc...)

Now if for some reason your ISP provide an IPv6 address this is not supported by the TL-WR841N

I don't have any need of modem in my house, I have optic fibre and have ethernet jacket in my wall
If I connect my computer directly to that ethernet jacket I get IP-adress fine in less than 1 second
The ip-adress is IPv4

I have also smart-tv and other devices, if I connect them directly to ethernet jacket I also get IP-adress fine in less than 1 second

I have linux so the corresponding command is ifconfig and if I do that I get the same values as for logging into TL-WR841N
web-interface and do quick-setup.

Quick-setup gives me OK ip-adress but I have to do quick setup everytime to get it
If I just power on modem I get 0.0.0.0

I'll try and report back.

any input about implication of
"1. Added session mechanism to improve security;"

which is stated at http://www.tp-link.com/en/Support/download/?model=TL-WR841N&version=V9
for newest firmware 141013

How insecure will my router be?

BTW Why doesn't tplink supply md5sum or shasum of firmware so you can control dowload was OK?
I miss that

also I was thinking of trying DD-WRT but it is in beta for TL-WR841N V9
and seems to have lots of problems, maybe OpenWrt

OK I downgraded to TL-WR841N_V9_131129 firmware

Did a quick-setup and got IP-adress

powered down both computer and router.
Waited 2 min.

powered up router.
Waited 2 min.

powered up computer and router had already negotiated IP-adress.
(This fails in newest firmware version)

conclusion:
something doesn't work in newest firmware TL-WR841N_V9_141013
hardware of my router is OK

What about security? Regarding security what is the difference between firmware versions?

will email support as well
