I bought a W9980 a few days ago as a replacement for the dire BT HomeHub5, and after some initial hiccups managed to get it going. Sort of. I have a couple of queries I hope someone can help me with.

1. I have two laptops (both Win7): an elderly Acer which I use for unimportant stuff (mainly just browsing) and this lives downstairs right beside the router and being just there and handy for swapping cables about I used it exclusively for setting the router up and testing things out initially. This has basic free ZoneAlarm. My other one is a newer HP (but still 5 years old) upstairs with ZA Pro that I do most of my work on. The Acer sees the 2.4Ghz SSID and connects to it and provides internet access. I happily hopped upstairs to the HP to try that one out and yes! It sees the 2.4 SSID. But then, noooo! It connects to it but resolutely and so far permanently says 'no internet access'. I'm thinking this is might be a firewall issue but I'm so network-illiterate about these things I don't have a clue where to start. Any advice? I can probably provide answers to questions but don't expect me to understand them. All the wireless routers I've ever installed (not many, admittedly) just went straight in with no connectivity issues at all.

I looked on the forum for related problems but didn't see anything that would help with this. Apologies if I missed anything.

2. Neither of these devices 'sees' the 5Ghz SSID. I have both the 2.4 and the 5 turned on in the router and they are active. I know this because my wife's 2-year old Macbook can connect to them both, as can my iPad3 (although my newish phone doesn't see the 5Ghz one). Is it an age thing? Maybe the network cards in the laptops are too old to recognise it (clutching at straws there, no doubt). I haven't tried our 3-year-old TV yet. I would like to have the choice, at least.

3. (OK, I lied). When I connect the router to either of the laptops via Ethernet cable, the only SSID ever used is the 2.4Ghz one, and it is using its factory-set name. Is this normal? How can I get it to use the 5Ghz one?

Any advice or suggestions will be welcome.

1. What's the IP address obtained on HP laptop? How about the signal strength on the laptop? Can you log in web inerface of W9980?
2. To detect 5GHz Wi-Fi, you have to ensure that wireless network card on wireless clients support dual bands. Otherwise, they can only see 2.4GHz. As your laptops are several years old, maybe they don't support it at all.
3. If you want to change Wi-Fi name, login web inteface of W9980 to do that.

Hi, thanks for the response.

I tried the wireless connection on the HP again after a few days break and glory be, it connects and somehow (nothing changed) it now says 'Internet access'. However, it (presumably Windows) is lying through its teeth because if I try any web page I get a blank screen and the status says 'looking up (the url)...' but a few moments later I get 'This web page is not available'. Back to square 1 (or 1.1, maybe).

The IP address for the HP 192.168.1.100.

Signal strength seems to hop between 'fair' and 'excellent'.

I can not log in to the router's web interface while connected wirelessly with the HP- same message, 'not available'.

I have already logged in to the router with the Acer and changed both the SSIDs and passwords to something more manageable.

Glad to have the network card age thing clarified. Seems reasonable as all the newer devices can see both bands. Maybe I should update my laptop.

I'm still suspecting ZoneAlarm but don't know enough about it to mess with its settings. However, I just discovered I could 'snooze' it for 5 minutes but get exactly the same results. So maybe that theory bites the dust. Back to square zero.
