TD W8968 Viewing files from USB storage is very slow and buffers

I have connected by 16 GB mass storage with some photographs to my TP Link modem router TD w8968
However, when I use my cell phone to view the files from the router via shared storage, the files open up very slow with each file taking seconds to buffer before opening up. Am I missing some configurations here?
I have just added the USB and configured it to be visible as a storage. I've deliberately turned off the media server hoping that would add some more power for the router to enable file sharing. Enabling it doesn't help much either
