You can't put a smart switch there as there's no neutral wire. The white is most likely hot from the light fixture.

@Ewkie Your problem may be an issue with the mesh as I mentioned earlier - you can't force a Kasa device to an AP unless it has a unique SSID. Perhaps it is a chip incompatibility but that sounds...
