During the past 3 years+ I have used my AX50 as router along with my Huawei ONT EG8145V5 (ISP supplied). Everything worked just fine but recently the speed dropped form 500+MBps to as low as 160MBps....

Did you contact email TP-LINK support? I guess this is your best option. Do not download a firmware file from any non TP-Link website.
