Hi there!

I currently have a house full of Tapo light bulbs, a smart led strip, and a bunch of smart plugs. All of this is linked to Amazon Alexa for voice operation.

Recently, I needed to change wifi password, and discovered that there is currently NO WAY to change a wifi password, let alone an SSID on a tapo device, without completely removing / deleting it from the app, and therefore your account, which then has the knock on effect of also removing it from all of my voice routines on my amazon account.

This is RIDICULOUS. You are selling us mountains of smart devices and then causing us massive headaches should we need to change wifi networks for any reason. It is not acceptable and had I have known this prior to purchasing, I would not have.

Do none of you who work for tp-link actually use these devices? Never encountered this issue?

Presently I am having massive issues with ALL of my tapo devices at times lagging like crazy, despite the fact that they alone use my 2.4ghz wifi band, and the rest are using 5ghz and 6ghz bands. Rather than just using the whole 2.4ghz band, I had decided to try setting up an IoT network, and moving all my tapo devices to that, to see if that improves things, but this now presents a major hassle, and a lot of work when it should be a simple thing. The device does NOT need to be removed from my account. I am not disposing of it. I am simply moving it to a new network. I do not understand why it cannot be run through the app, even if it means physically taking the phone near each device for it to make the changes necessary. Hell, I even have a tapo hub, which I had mistakenly assumed meant it would run ALL of my tapo devices, and so give me the ability to do what I suggest, and move them all to a new network run by the hub itself. But no!! it will only connect my temp sensor, and my 1 motion sensor that I thought i'd try out... yay!! what a waste that thing is!

So now, to move to a new ssid/password I must delete/remove each device, 1 by 1, then go around the whole house, and 1 by 1 re-add them to the network (and half of them will refuse to do it, of that I have no doubt, because at least a couple of my tapo plugs took me 100x to get it to actually accept the network to begin with [so reliable!, am i right?]) and after I've done that for my 24 tapo devices in the house, i'll then have to go and re-create all of the voice routines for them as well.

BLEEPING RIDICULOUS!

We all NEED this functionality. In an ever growing 'smart' systems environment, with more and more devices being made every day, how can this not be a priority?

PLEASE do something about this post haste. I have been a big supporter of tp-link kasa and now Tapo devices for some time, but if this functionality cannot or will not be added then all of these devices will be destined for the bin, and I will be sharing the reasons for that far and wide.

@dchristian : Fully agree. I didn't expected to redefine all my devices and network while changing Wifi network.

Me too, I donĀ“t have as many Tapo devices as some folk, but more than enough for this to make me angry.  Imagine if we all start invoicing TP-Link for the hours of our time this oversight on their part will waste.

Totally agree. I've just found this out too. Never had a product where you had to factory reset the device just to change networks. Like you, thought TP-Link products were good until I found this out. Ridiculous!

I do so feel for you, I too have so many devices that I have had to upgrade my Sky Router (Sky could not cope with all these devices on its Wi-Fi) to an Archer AX72 Pro to use this for all my Tapo Cameras x8, Tapo Smart Plugs x21, a Hub with SD Card, Tapo Smart Wall light switches x8, Strip light and an External Garden Camera with Solar Charging.

These are the items I can remember on the top of my head without going into my app and mentioning more Tapo stuff like door bell etc Now to transfer all these devices to the Archer from the Sky router and having read that a reset is the only way that I can do this is enough to make me want to pull my hair out.

Fortunately my Ring devices are but a few and easy to reset and switch to the Archer but this Tapo dilemma has me going nuts... :-(

Could anyone please find a simple solution, please, please, please?

  @gzorbas

I have the same issue.  for now I workaround the issue by enabling the guest wifi on my new broadband router and when specifying the SSID and password, I just use the old credentials.

The stupid Tapo devices can then get on the network and I can still manage them using the app.  You can;t chnage the wifi details of these devices without removing from the app and re-registering them with app.  A massive oversight by the SW engineers of this product.

I will remove and re-reg at some point but I can't really be bothered and the guest wifi looking like the old wifi SSID is good enough for me.

You get what you pay for TBH.

TO-Link engineering don't care.  They have bundled this thread with another thread that dates back to 2021 with no feedback.  They kow about this, but seemingly still shift product that locks in the wifi.

Just plain lazy engineering and customer support!

I used this: https://www.tapo.com/uk/faq/201/

9. How can I use the Tapo Smart Plug once again if I switch to a new router?

I have two recommendations for you:

  • Push the button for 10 seconds to reset the device and start over, or for 5 seconds to put it in configuration mode and connect to a new network.

I used method 2 - press the button for 5 seconds and then using the app, add device, find the device, set the new network, it then says its a preconfigured device and would I like to keep it that way, I say yes.

Wifi changed without factory reset
