Model: EAP225-Outdoor
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 5.1.6

I purchased the EAP225 because it supposedly has a range of up to 200m.

I needed to get WiFi to a studio located 50m from the house.

The existing house WiFi (Tp-Link AX5400) does reach the studio, but with a weak unreliable signal.

The EAP-225 is mounted on the corner of a balcony, 1m above the floor, 2.1m from the exterior wall of the house.

Powered by the POE adapter that came with it.

Setup using Omada app on iPhone/iPad - Omada controller ADF989.

It is in direct line of sight to the studio, with a tree midway between.

EAP-225 boosted the WiFi signal in the studio to 40-60% according WiFi Explorer app.

This was sufficient to provide a reliable connection with down/upload speeds almost matching those at the house.

It has been working well for about 1 week.

Today, although the signal level was in its usual range, there was initially no internet connection.

I check all the cabling, rebooted the system and I did get internet in the studio, but the down/upload speeds were very low (sinking to under 1Mbs), web pages would timeout rather than load etc.

I then tested the EAP-225 using several devices at the house, and I observed down/upload speeds were close to those when connected to the AX5400, but a few minutes latter there can be a long delay before websites will connect and speedtest.net times out.

For a device with a range supposedly up to 200m (300m on 5G) this seems to be very poor and erratic performance.

Does that it worked well for about a week, and now seems to be useless indicate the device is faulty and I should return it?

 Hi @DavyB

This doesn't necessarily mean the device is faulty. Here are several factors that could be causing the problem:

1. Interference: Even though it was working well initially, new sources of interference could have emerged. For example, a neighbor might have installed a new wireless device, such as a cordless phone, a baby monitor, or another Wi - Fi access point on a nearby channel. These can cause interference and degrade the performance of your EAP225. The tree in the line of sight might also have an impact. If the tree has grown leaves or there is more moisture in the environment (such as after rain), it can absorb and scatter the Wi - Fi signal more than before, leading to a reduction in performance.

2. Weather Conditions: Changes in weather can affect Wi - Fi signals. For example, high humidity, rain, or even strong winds can cause signal attenuation. If there has been a significant change in the weather since the device was working well, it could be a contributing factor.

3. Bandwidth Congestion: If there are more devices connected to the EAP225 now than before, it could lead to bandwidth congestion. Each device sharing the connection competes for the available bandwidth. Even if the signal strength is good, the limited bandwidth can result in slow speeds and connection time - outs. You might want to check if any new devices have been added to the network.

What You Can Do:

Check for Interference: Use a Wi - Fi analyzer app to check for other wireless signals in the area and see if there are any channels with less interference that you can switch the EAP225 to.

You can find more details from the following link:

If you have tried all the above and the issue still persists, there maybe some hardware defect. you can contact retailer.

You can also consider more powerful products.

  @Vincent-TP

Thanks for your response - I understand all those points.

1. I am in low density ex-urban area with only few WiFi networks around me.

2. The tree in question has been in full leaf since the AP was set up.

3. The AP worked previously in both hot dry sunny weather and in rain (our spring is very variable this year).

3. There is only one (or at most) two devices connected to the AP.

4. I think I mentioned I had monitored the signal with WiFi Explorer Lite (for Mac).

5. Today the WiFi connection worked for about 10 mins before being lost. The signal strength was constant - just no internet connection and/or no connection to the WiFi.

6. Using my iPhone hotspot for internet, I again monitored the signal with WiFi Explorer Lite.

7. What this showed was that the 2.4GHz radio was either disappearing at random intervals or was on the same channel as a neighboring WiFi at similar strength.

8. The 5GHz radio was weaker and seemed to like being on the same channnel as a neighboring WiFi.

9. Manually setting the channels of both radios didn't make any difference at all.

  @DavyB

I assume you are using the EAP225 in standalone repeating mode, if so, you should actually manually fix the channel of the AX5400 to 1 or 6 or 11, based on whichever one has the least amount of competition in your area (you should power off the EAP225 when doing this test with your wifi analyser app).  If the AX5400 is set to auto and the 225 has to keep hunting for it because it changed channels...you would get this sort of behaviour.
