Model: RE705X
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.4 Build 20230509 Rel. 78185

Hello, I have an EX233 router in an EasyMesh network with two RE705X extenders.
Band Steering is enabled on the router, EasyMesh is enabled on all devices.

One extender (located in my basement) is connected to the 2.4 GHz network; the other one, even it is much closer to the router, only connects to the 5 GHz network, with a much weaker signal (and speed):

I have reset the RE twice but still, after the reboot, whenever I enable EasyMesh, this RE only connects as badly as shown above.

Obviously, I am not allowed to amend the setting:

If I disable EasyMesh on this RE, it connects to the 2.4 GHz network as expected.

Needless to say, the two RE705X have the same firmware.

Any hint?

Hi@Agostino1972,

Thank you for reporting your issue to our community.

It is indeed a bit strange. Could you please exchange the locations of your two range extender for a comparison? This is to locate the issue is on a specific unit or place.

Please remove the extender located in my basement and test if the issue persists on the unit much closer to router.

  @Joseph-TP

I have had the same thought! I have switched off the basement RE (A196), reset the newer RE (9C11), and added it via WPS: it worked like a breeze, connecting to the 2.4 GHz network of the router at a good speed.

Then, I plugged in the "basement RE" again, waited a little, and now I have the following situation.

Speeds look ok, although it seems the old RE is now connected to the new one.

The web interfaces of both the RE report the RE as in an EasyMesh network:

And it seems each RE is connected directly with the router (and not in a chain, as displayed by the router's web page).

Make sure you click on the "Router" pictograms and check whether the MAC address of the "Host Network" device is indeed F0:09:0D..., and not EC:75:00...
The web interface of the RE is not sophisticated enough to show a pictogram that resembles the actual type of host device and the RE also doesn't know how many devices are lined up between itself and the actual Internet.

Hello, you were right: while the ground floor RE was connected to the  router (at 2.4 GHz), I powered on the basement RE, and it connected to the other RE, not to the router!

I have done a few more tests, swapping and moving the extenders around the house, powering them on and off and check every combination (my cat had a lot of fun!).
My conclusion is that, no matter the location, no matter the specific RE, what happens is:

- the first RE to be powered on, connects to the router's 2.4 Ghz network
- the second RE to be powered on, either connects to the other RE, or to the router's 5 Ghz network. This appears to be random, and probably depends on which signal is stronger at the time of the 2nd RE's boot.

A while ago I have powered off the Ground Floor's RE (9C11), and then powered it on again. So now I have this situation, that it, same as when I set it up for the first time:

As per the picture above, the 9C11 RE (ground floor) should be working very badly, but actually it seems to have 3 devices connected:

The 3 devices listed above are my smartphone, my wife's Huawei smartphone, and the Dell laptop I am working on right now. And they are all working well, for sure way above the 0 Mbps listed in the first picture above...

Therefore, I am thinking that this might be a "GUI glitch", that is, an information reported incorrectly, maybe due to the fact that my EX233 is an ISP-customized model, and/or by the Band Steering option that is enabled on the router itself.

(While I was writing this reply, my wife moved from her room to another, and I saw her Huawei phone switching from the RE to the router):

Hi@Agostino1972,

Thank you for your detailed test results.

EX233 is indeed an ISP-customized router. We may need to ask the corresponding engineers to judge if the details displayed on the GUI is wrong.
It seems that the current range extender network is running normally. It is recommended that you continue to observe for a while. If there is any update, please feel free to contact us.
