NOTE: This affects both HS100 and KP105, but I have seen it mostly on HS100

 

I have been using Kasa smart plugs since 2019 and have generally found them to be quite reliable. However over the last month I have had three separate instances on three different plugs where each plug dropped its WiFi connection and refused to reconnect. There didn't seem to be any reason for this (power cut etc). The plug just randomly decided to disconnect. No other plugs were affected at the same time (I have five in total).

 

Switching the plug off at the wall socket and immediately on again did not restore the connection (red status LED).

 

However, in each case, if I switched the plug off and left it overnight, when I powered it back on the following day it immediately reconnected. I found this on the first plug by accident ("one last try before I throw it away") and it has also worked on both subsequent failures. The worrying thing is that this is becoming a regular occurrence and it is getting to the point that I no longer trust my smart plugs to be reliable enough while I am away from home.

 

One might point the finger at my router as the common denominator, but I have numerous other IOT devices connected and none of those have been misbehaving recently.

 

Has anything changed at the KASA back end which might be causing this?

When you restore power to the plug, does the LED indicator display a normal status change, or does it immediately turn solid red? How long have the devices that are experiencing abnormalities been used?

When I restore power to the plugs they go through the normal startup routine and the flashing green LED eventually turns solid green whent he wifi connection is restored.

Its difficult to judge the age of the plugs in question but some of my HS100s are 6 years old. The KP105s probably about half that.

  @Digsy  Is this the change when you leave the plug unplugged overnight? You mentioned that a simple power cycle cannot restore plug's connection.

It's best to confirm the smart plug's signal strength, just in case. How to check and improve the network connection stability of Kasa smart devices 

 

Try configuring a smart plug on a different network for some time to monitor its connection status, such as by creating a 2.4GHz guest WiFi. If it is stable in other networks, then keep it that way.

Note that this problem does not occur regularly enough for me to do extensive testing. Right now all my plugs have been stable for several days. It can be weeks between failures.

I have a very simple router and I do not have a way of creating a second network just for testing. But my Wifi is stable. I have over 20 devices connected and they all work fine.

 

The plug startup behaves the same if I do a quick power cycle or leave it off overnight. The only difference is that if I do a quick power cycle then after the flashing green LED, it does not connect and the LED goes solid orange. If it connects then the LED goes solid green.

 

I have however made the following changes in my router:

1) Extended the wifi IP address lease time from 1 day to maximum. This might decrease the amount of times that the plug disconnects and reconnects just to obtain a new IP address.

2) Told the router to re-select the best Wifi channel.
