Custom Colour Values in Tapo App to Write In
Hi TP-Link team,
I'd like to add my voice to the many users who have been asking for direct HEX or RGB color code input in the Tapo app. The current color wheel is great for casual use, but it makes precise color selection nearly impossible — and the displayed HEX value at the top of the picker is read-only, which is a missed opportunity.
Why this matters:
- Matching specific brand colors, room palettes, or design references requires exact values, not a guessing game on a small wheel
- Replicating the same color across multiple bulbs (or after a power cycle) is currently very inconsistent
- Many users want to recreate well-known lighting presets (Philips Hue scenes, IKEA TRÅDFRI tones, etc.) and the only way is to drag the picker until the displayed code roughly matches — which often takes minutes per color
- Other smart bulb ecosystems (Hue, Yeelight, LIFX, Nanoleaf) all support direct HEX entry; Tapo is one of the few that doesn't
What I'm asking for:
- Make the HEX value at the top of the color picker tappable and editable so users can type or paste a code directly
- Optionally, add an RGB slider input alongside it
- Allow saving custom colors to favorites with a user-defined name (not just the auto-generated HEX label)
This has been requested in multiple threads over the past years and consolidated into the main "Custom Colour Values in Tapo App (HEX or RGB)" topic. The demand is clearly there. As a software change with no hardware dependency, this should be one of the easier feature additions on the roadmap.
Thanks for considering — looking forward to seeing this in a future update.
