Here are the troubleshooting suggestions for the Tapo smart plug configuration failure issue. Locate the problem on your smart plug and refer to the corresponding tips for troubleshooting.

1. Case One: The smart plug is not in the setup mode (e.g, the led doesn't flash between two colors, cannot see smart plug's Wi-Fi.)

Factory reset the device. How to factory reset the Tapo smart plug

2. Case Two:  Smart plug's Wi-Fi shows "No Internet", "No Connection", or "Unsecured".

Smart device WiFi like Tapo Smart Plug XXXX is used for configuration only. It does not have an internet connection. When the Tapo app asks you to connect the smart plug's WiFi during the configuration, simply go to the phone's WiFi settings to connect the smart plug WiFi, then go back to the app and continue the setup.

Note: Smart plugs configured using other methods (models requiring Bluetooth/hub) will not broadcast the device's Wi-Fi.

3. Case Three: Error "Unable to Find/Connect to this Tapo Device"

    (1) Make sure to select the correct device model. Move your phone closer to the smart device.

    (2) Power on one smart plug at a time during the setup.

    (3) Turn off VPN or any ad-guard apps.

    (4) Ensure your phone is connected to the device's Wi-Fi or that Bluetooth has been enabled. Re-enable WiFi or Bluetooth on the phone and try again.

    (5) *For iOS devices: Enable 'Local Network' permission for the Tapo app in phone settings.

4. Case Four: Router WiFi is not found as an available option to connect

    (1) Only your router WiFi is not visible, but other WiFi is available:

      a. Move the smart device closer to the router.

      b. Ensure your Wi-Fi network is on 2.4GHz. Split a separate 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for the smart device.

      c. Click "RESCAN" to refresh the Wi-Fi list.

      d. Manually input SSID and password if the router's SSID is hidden.

      e. Reset the Tapo smart device.

    (2) Cannot detect any WiFi network:

      a. Click "RESCAN" to refresh the Wi-Fi list

      b. Reset the Tapo smart device.

      c. Change another mobile device for setup.

5. Case Five: Error "Unable to Connect to Your Network", "Pairing Failed", or " Failed to receive an IP address"

    (1) Double-check the WiFi password. Go to the phone's Wi-Fi settings, forget the router Wi-Fi, and test if you can connect it again successfully with the same password to check if it's correct. Change the Wi-Fi name or password if it includes special characters.

    (2) Move the device closer to the router.

    (3) Reset the Tapo smart device, reboot the router, and try again

    (4) Check if any special settings on the router might block smart device from connecting, such as Mac filtering, firewall settings, Blacklist/Whitelist, access control, etc. Try to connect the smart device to guest WiFi or hotspot WiFi for comparison.
