In other words, if I have multiple HS210KITs, do I need to ensure that each set of two switches is installed on the same 3 way circuit because they're somehow preset to communicate together.

Or does it not matter and I can mix and match as I like?

The HS210KIT can be used separately or you can mix them as you like.
