Model: Tapo C246D
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.5

The C246D can already do two-way audio through the Tapo app — the Push to Talk and Call features work fine.

But there's no way to send audio to the camera through any API when you're not holding your phone.
I use Frigate for home security, and when it detects someone, I want it to play a warning message through the camera speaker automatically. Like: "You're on private property." Right now that's impossible without building a separate speaker.
The hardware clearly supports audio output — the Talk feature proves it. Can we get either:

- An API to upload and play audio clips
- Or documentation on how to send audio to the camera from third-party software
- Or just make the ONVIF audio backchannel actually route to the speaker

This would open up a lot of home automation use cases without needing extra hardware.

Hello,

Regarding your request for an open API to enable automated audio playback, we are currently unable to provide this feature.

However, you might be able to achieve a similar outcome using the Smart Actions feature in the Tapo app: Tapo Smart Actions: How to Set Up Automations and Shortcuts on the Tapo App

  1. Create a Smart Action with the trigger set to “Motion is Detected by [your camera].”
  2. Add an action: “Control Camera” → “Play Voice.”
  3. Select “Custom Alarm” as the sound option, where you can record and upload your own voice message (e.g., “You’re on private property”).

This way, your camera can automatically play your custom warning through its built-in speaker when motion is detected, without requiring additional hardware or third-party software.

Best Regards:
