I see both wifi networks available but am able to connect with just Netgear54 not Netgear54_EXT.

Does this mean I am connected to just my old network?

what's the model number of your extender? and the light status? Usually if the 2.4G/5G or signal light is on, extender is linked to your router successfully.
Did you change the network name of the extender during the setup on the admin page? Or you pressed the button to set it up with your router? What happen if you connect to Netgear54_EXT?
