I did the quick-setup on my AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender RE305 via the web interface. It found both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies on the host network. However, after saving to apply settings and reboot the extender the 5Ghz light is off on the extender and the Status tab on the extender web interface shows "No Signal" under "5Ghz Wireless".

5Ghz on the host network is working fine, I double checked by connecting with my Macbook. The host router is a Netgear WNDR3300. Under wireless settings of the router the "Mode" is set to "Up to 270Mbps at 5Ghz & 54Mbps at 2.4Ghz". "11N Channel" is set to "149/5.745Ghz", "11G Channel" is set to "auto". I also tried setting "11N Channel" to "44/5.220Ghz" but that didn't work either.

Any idea why the extender won't connect to the host network on 5Ghz after rebooting? It seems to find it fine during setup.

Any troubleshooting steps I should try before I RMA this thing?

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi, what's the modem number of your router? Did you setup the extender next to the router? We know that the wifi range of 5G is not as far as 2.4G, so try to setup when the extender is next to the router, also make sure the wifi password of the 5G you entered on the setup page is correct.

@Kevin SG

Not sure why TP-LINK support didn't understand the range extender needs to support U-NII-3 channel in future to keep their product line working for all audience.

@Aloysius

Got update from TPLink support which solved my problem by working with service provider and got the channel changed.

Here is reply from support member

"We inform you that RE 305 EU/3.0 device is not supporting Band 4 which covers channel 149. It is mandatory for CE certification that without dfs we cannot use higher range channels in device."

@mknasiak It is possible that your device does not support 3 digit channel, like mine :-) Use a 2 digit channel in 5 ghz and it will work. 3 digit is an special protocol not all the devices work on those.

This sounds right and matches my tests, the device isn't certified to use DFS channels and since it's certified in EU (same version sold in India), you can only use channels 32 to 48 on the 5Ghz band on the primary router with this extender. Any other channels require DFS certification which this device does not have and hence will not work.

Short answer, you can only use channels 32-48 on 5Ghz band with the RE305 extender.

@mknasiak Hi, Please note that I did face the same issue. Please change channel in your router in the 36 to 64 range. If your router is locked by ISP, call and inform them to change.

My router was set to default channel 149. This was locked by ISP and they made the change for the extender RE305 to detect 5G signal. I am not sure however if this extender will work in 100 to 140 range of channels.

As far as I know (seen from Netspot app), 5GHz channels are separated in the ranges as below:

36 to 64 (36, 40, 44... etc)

100 to 140 (100, 104, 108..etc)

149 to 165 (149, 153, 157, 161, 165)
