I have an Archer C1200 v1.0.
I setup a PPTP VPN. I registered my IP with No-IP.com. I setup the hostname on the Dynamic DNS section of the router setup page.
I am able to connect to the VPN if the device is connected to the router BUT I can't connect if I'm using my phone's data network or work/school Wi-Fi, or any other outside connection.

I realized I need to enable port forwarding.. which I tried, but it didn't work. For the service type I selected PPTP, and it automatically filled out the External Port & Internal Port with 1723, which from what I am told, is the port for PPTP VPN. However, it left the Internal IP box blank, and asked me to fill it out. I entered some random ones that weren't assigned, like 192.168.0.125. It accepted it, but I still could not connect to the VPN.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a modem? And is the WAN IP address of the Archer C1200 a public IP?
If the Archer C1200 gets private IP address, then you need to open port 1723 on your modem for the router.

I have a modem. How do I know if my WAN IP is public or private? I can see it when I Google what is my IP.
THe modem I have is: Motorola SURFboard SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0. I don't know how to open a port on the modem. Do modems have configuration pages?

You may find the router's WAN/Internet IP address in the Internet part of status page, then check whether it is exactly the same as the one you see when you google what is my ip

The internal LAN IP is 192.168.0.1.
I'd prefer not to post my public WAN IP ...

So the service works in lan, it looks like it's related with the wan part. Maybe you can check if all the info from wan side is proper
