What is actually new in the QCA7550 chip? Products released with it are marketed with the AV1300 speed rating (vs AV1200 for the QCA7500). Is this just marketing gimmick or the new chip actually contains enhancements that result it higher throughput? What else?

The AV1300 rating is plain bullshit - the QCA7550 still adheres to the AV1200 standard, which happens to go a bit above 1200 Mbit in perfect (read: laboratory) conditions.

So no real differences? There must have been a reason they opted to release a brand new chip...if it's no speed, then maybe reliability?

There is no public documentation on those. Typical things would be cost and power optimization, higher integration e.g. with Ethernet ports, those things. Functionally, as seen from the outside of the product, there is zero difference.
