I have the TP-Link AC2600 (RE650) Wi-Fi Range Extender and use the TP-Link App, my wireless modem/router is the AT&T U-Verse. My issue is I have 300Mbps download from my AT&T Wi-Fi but only 20Mbps download through the RE650 (using iPhone to test both). The RE650 is located in line of sight to the AT&T router. I would expect to see the same Mbps or close to it on both units.

What am I missing?

@Mr_D

Range extenders work in half duplex so look around getting around 50%-60%, take into account of the environment which will drop that speed further.

If you have internet from the extender then at that point you need to test every single possible location and see where is the best performance.

You can also try this method as well to see if it may help with performance. What it does is to connect one band of the range extender to the router while the other band is made available to wireless devices.

@Mr_D

Hi,

I'm seeing the same thing.  I've been able to recover the speed by rebooting the extender.  Try this to see if it helps.

1. Run some sort of speed test to see what your bandwidth is.  Mine will drop from 150Mbs to 10Mbs over time.

2. Sleep your computer so it doesn't try to switch networks

3. Power the RE 650 down, wait several seconds and then power it back on

4. Wait until it comes clear back up and is connected (all blue)

5. Start your computer back up and check the speed again. Mine will be back up to 150Mbs.

Kind regards

Mike

Hi,

I'm facing the same issue as well here, everyday after few hours the wifi speed drops from >150 Mbps to <10 Mbps download and <1 Mbps upload. I immediately switches to host wifi and it can provide >100Mbps, so it's clearly the extender issue.

It will be back to normal after restart, but this should not be the final solution.

TP Link, please investigate and fix this issue.

I have been having the exact same problem the speeds go well below 20% of the original even with it directly connected.

This RE650 surely has some issues. I thought to upgrade my existing WA850RE to RE650 to get 5 Ghz but this RE650 is not performing as expected. In fact, WA850 is remarkably doing well over 2.4 Ghz only. RE650 works fine for some time (router single strength is 70%) and then it will gradually slow down, have to restart it after some time to make it work. Upgraded the firmware to the latest but same results.  TP-Link, do something, this is not a cheap device.  I am forced to move back to WA850

  @Mozzee, this is what worked for me:
1. On the router, switch off band steering/Smart Connect.

2. On the router, if QoS is available, manually override by setting your ISP's stated connection speeds.

3. On the router, manually set channel and bandwidth for each band (I use channels recommended by the Wi-fi Analyzer app, and 40 or 80 MHz for bandwidth)

4. On the extender, reboot by unplugging it, or through the Tether app or its web page administration.
